An itchy nose means your going to have a quarrel with someone. Seeing an ambulance is very unlucky unless you pinch your nose or hold your breath until you see a black or a brown dog.

Try to coax it out by opening windows and doors, or call animal control. Don't worry, there is nothing ominous about it. That is only a silly old wives tale!

There is a superstition that is it bad luck to walk underneath of a ladder. Unless the ladder falls on you, nothing will happen if you walk under one. However, it is probably best to just walk around the ladder.

Contrary to the famous Biblical quote: "There is nothing new under the sun," many people in the modern world interpret current events to be unique in the history of the world.

Many of the superstitions which people have today are ancient (interpreting astrological signs or concrete predictions of an immanent apocalypse for example).

I think some of the most popular superstitions of our current culture tend to manifest as pop culture phenomenons.

What do I mean by this? Well, here in America, TV shows about ghost hunters have become immensely popular.

While ghost stories are not new, the new lengths to which people are willing to go in order to prove their existence is a recent phenomenon. It says a great deal about our scientific world view: people are infinitely more likely to believe something that has some semblance of scientific evidence to support it.

In actual fact, the predominant Christian religions in America despise the idea that God would allow souls to wander the earth without immediately giving them a permanent destination.

Also, just about every single ghastly experience can probably be disregarded provided that one has a healthy respect for the power that one's emotions and imagination each have over one's ability to objectively interpret an event.

People experience something creepy--their TV turns on due to a power surge--and the superstition exists to explain that event.

What makes this particular superstition 'modern' is the extent to which people are willing to attempt to prove it.

These attempts are, to the trained scientific or philosophical intellect, pretty ridiculous.

This sort of contrived 'pseudoscience,' tries to gives people the illusion of actual proof.

Next time you turn on a 'Ghost Show' listen for the characteristic and imitative 'jargon.' Supposed experts on these shows will usually say something along the lines of: "We have high readings in Area x."

Other modern superstitions? I think "Ancient Aliens" or "UFO Encounter" type shows are other good answers to that question.

There has been the superstition that the seventh son of a seventh son would become a werewolf. This superstition was particularly strong in Argentina where such a child usually 'came to harm'. To curb such atrocities a law was passed that such boys became the official wards of the President and became the recipients of benefits and scholarships. It would be unusual if two people had exactly the same reading but anything can happen. If it did happen and you trust the person doing the reading, then at that particular time, both people were in similar situations.

You then have salt on the floor. The myth is that if you spill salt, you have to throw some over your left shoulder or you will have bad luck. Although it is just a myth, many people who don't consider themselves superstitious do it anyway, "just in case".

It probably depends on which if any methods of cursing something you believe are likely to work. Which means, for most people, no methods at all.

If you are referring to finding good luck in your life, there are many people who do not believe in it; these people say you create your own luck by making intelligent choices and having a plan to handle those things that go wrong. I am Hungarian, two that I have heard are that keeping a cactus in the house will bring bad luck. Another is that owls, even owl sculptures, are also bad luck.

This is not correct. Cactus' plants are not bad luck in general. Only certain types of cactus are bad for luck.

Only if an owl flies into your house is it bad luck. Having a statue of an owl in the home is not good luck and not bad luck.

I would think its bad luck to find anything dead in your yard, but I'm not sure if a cardinal means anything...usually its crows that are "bad luck".

First we have to ask some related questions to see what we are actually addressing here, such as Is luck something, an entity that we can identify with, such as beauty or personalty or power.

We say Mrs X is beautiful, and she's always beautiful, at least until he looses that beauty because of age or accidents or something like that. She's beautiful at hone, in the office or in the street.

Singularly, we say Mr X is a powerful man, and that's with him all the time, at least under that changes.

Acquisition's can we say that Mr Y is lucky, just because he acquired some large prize or similar stuff. If "luck" is like power or beauty, then we should expect the "lucky" Mr Y to be so all time and every where, until he looses that quality. which is not really what we observe. Commonly we see that for every "luck" observance, we can see many "unlucky" mishaps. We say he's "lucky" taking this action, but he had the worst "luck" with women. And then what's really the difference between he has "luck", and he has a bad "luck", and what's the difference bet-wen he's lucky and he has "luck".

I Personally don't believe in "luck", but I do believe in other energy separate from us that we can attract or repel based on thing we do and inner status we form in an around us.
