In most cases, the victim is restrained and unable to resist the violence of the perpetrator. This is because there are numerous motives for torture such as: punishment, revenge, political re-education, deterrence, interrogation or coercion of the victim or a third party, or simply the sadistic gratification of those carrying out or observing the torture.
