When trimming, trim dead and diseased branches first. Then any branches growing toward the center of the tree, as well as branches crossing each other. It is important when trimming a maple, as well as any other opposite leaf tree (2 leaves across from each other on a twig) to cut right above a leaf, and do it at an angle to cut one of the leaves off. This insures that you remove one of the growth nodes that are right above each leaf. If you cut strait across then both nodes will grow and you will get what is called witches broom.
