How did Ballarat get its name?
Ballarat is a city in central Victoria which came to prominence during the goldrush era in Australia. The actual word "Ballarat" is thought to be derived from two words of the local Wauthaurong tribe, "balla" meaning elbow or possibly reclining on the elbow, and "arat" meaning place. This is believed to refer to the fact that the indigenous people formed a camp by the swampland now known as Lake Wendouree.

On 6 June 1835, Batman signed a 'treaty' with the Aborigines, giving him free access to almost 250,000 hectares of land. 2 months later, Governor Bourke declared Batman's treaties invalid, and issued a proclamation warning off him and his syndicate as trespassers on crown land. Despite the attempts at government intervention, the foundling settlement of Melbourne remained, and flourished. John Batman is considered to be the founder of Melbourne.

Buckley was a member of the first group of convicts to attempt the first settlement at Sorrento, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Buckley escaped from custody on 27 December 1803. After unsuccessfully trying to live on his own, he sought the help of the Aborigines, who gladly assisted him, believing he was the returned spirit of a dead warrior. Bluckley only gave himself up to free settler John Batman's landing party on 7 July 1835 in order to keep the peace between the whites and the Aborigines.
