on the engine block the order from the back to the front is 4321 but you will plug them in to the router like this. As the far left is 4 and the far right is 1. So from 4 on the engine to 4 on the router, from 3 to 3 on the router, then it switches from 2 on the engine to 1 on the router and finally from 1 on the engine to 2 on the router. So the router order should be 4312.

If you started it when the engine was cold and then did not run it long enough to warm up at all, it may well have a valve that is stuck open. I have a 94 960 and that is what happened to it. Google it and you will see others have experienced this. Some recommendations are to always run it to warm once it has been started from cold, to always use synthetic motor oil, and to run the engine (while driving in low gear) at high RPM for five minutes.
With the engine running, pull fuse #1, the fuel pump fuse. Let the engine run out of gas.
Its a motor. 2.3L is the displacement of the engine and I4 means inline 4. Which means that there are for pistons and they are in a straight line.
