I have been working with an 850 GLT 2.4 Turbo for the last year. This vehicle had an EVAP problem when I bought it. AND, I ended up doing a head job on in it. After my daughter let it get to hot. You first need to buy or rent a OBD-II scanner tool. these can be rented at a local parts store. Run the code test and it will give you a code.


My experiences have been the EVAP and Coolant problems.
If it is the EVAP issue then you need to look at the fuel tank to see if there is a leak present. There is a recall on the fuel tank if it is leaking on the upper side next to the tail pipe. There is also a a few lines that could be leaking in the fuel and secondary air system. Just a simple crack can cause this. In this case don't waste any money take it to a certified repair shop and have a smoke test accomplished. Then it will be pin pointed real quick and easy. This could run from $75-$150. DEPENDING.

Coolant issue: There are many reasons here. Leaking head gasket, bad temperature sensor, temp relay, coolant fan, etc. You can do a few simple tests. The head gasket is a little involved. A scale on working skill 1-5. I would put it at a level 3 or 4 depending on your knowledge on how to work on cars. If the water container is low. Fill as recommended by manufacturer. Drive around and look to see if quantity has gone down. If it has you can purchase a coolant test kit from Harbor Freight accomplish test from Haynes manual or ALLDATADIY.COM. Removing all spark plugs and pressurizing the system, You will see or here water bypassing into cylinders or outside the head. The engine will not use water at idle sitting still you have to drive the vehicle. Very expensive if it needs shop work. Bad temp sensor: My encounter was engine would start cold and hard start while warm or hot. This could be a wire problem. Fan Relay you have to listen when fan runs at idle and after driving. read Haynes manual for explanation. There is a sensor in the tank. Always make sure this existent. This item could cause you great heart ache.

Recommendations: If you are going to keep this vehicle for a while I recommend the ALLDATADIY.COM site. Very inexpensive and worth it as a guideline. This is a shop repair manual and some test you have to compensate for. Also the Haynes Manual. Also recommend if you replace the head gasket use only Volvo parts.
Reminder: Parts on this vehicle are very expensive.

Hi. I'm no expert, but I have a '96 850 and my brake lights quit working. I removed the dash panel under the steering wheel ( it had three torx screws ) and you can see the switch in there. It is at the top of the metal arm above the foot pedal. Mine is black with a white button that rests against the metal arm. I cleaned mine up with some electrical connection spray cleaner and it's working for now, anyway. Good luck.

Volvo recommends premium, but it can run on regular just fine without affecting the life of the engine.

In turbo models, the ECU dials back the turbo if you feed it regular, so performance will decrease, but the engine will run just fine.

Replacing the CV joints on a FWD Volvo is a doable task, but you need to follow the proper steps or you can damage the joint. In some cases the joint may be okay, but the boot around it can crack or leak grease. This can cause debris to enter the joint and then you're going to have problems.

I would recommend having a mechanic do this work if you have any doubts to your abilities. The joint can be expensive while as the boot is relatively cheap so make sure you determine the source of any problem before you spend money that you may not need to.

I have found 2 cans of r34 restore the A/C on my wife's 1994 850 wagon. I purchased a recharge kit a few years back, followed the instructions and it works fine.

If you have a Volvo roiginal radio, it is likely to be produced by Alpine. Depending on your radio, different Alpine changers may fit.

I have had to change it 2, and it is a royal pain in the butt. There are two bolts holding the housing on, however the housing is located underneath the throttle plate. so that being you have to remove the throttle plate and even then its a pain in the butt to get to the housing bolts.

The Volvo 850 does not have a non-interference engine. This means that if the timing belt breaks, then serious internal engine damage will inevitably occur.

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. Under the housing is the thermostat. Make sure when you put it back together the spring on the thermostat goes toward the engine. GoodluckJoe

This is a followup to the previous answer. After you find the housing and remove the hose, be aware that most of the thermostat housings are made of aluminum or some other fragile metal. Spray the mounting bolts thoroughly with WD-40 or Liquid Wrench (do they still make that?) and let it sit for awhile. If you have a six-point socket, use it to loosen the bolts. In any case, go easy on them. They're fairly easy to break, and you don't want the trauma of trying to remove the remnant. THEN when you reinstall, cover the bolts with anti-seize compound so they will come out easily next time.

PS: After the bolts are removed, the housing still may not want to separate from the manifold. Tap on it gently with a wooden hammer handle or some other device that won't crack it. Eventually you can slip a fine screwdriver or spatula under it to take it off. Be sure to scrape the gasket area clean.

Sorry to be so verbose. Truth is, this is NOT the easiest job to do on these engines.

Follow the top hose from the top of the radiator it is about a 2'' by about 1'6'' long to a hose clamp . Right under the hose clamp is the thermostat housing it has got three 10mm bolts holding it on the engine take that off and there's your thermostat , the thermostat itself has got a split O ring on the thermostat instead of a regular gasket it just pulls out and there you have it. IT DOES NOT HAVE A REGULAR GASKET JUST A O -RING. i DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS GUY COMES FROM TO THINK IT HAS A GASKET!

Your shift lock solenoid may be bad.

It depends on the engine variant. In 1995 Volvo offered a 2.0 20 value producing 143 BHP, a 2.5 10 valve producing 140 BHP (Yes, less than the 2.0 - 20V) a 2.5 20 valve at 170 BHP and the T-5 at 225 BHP. A special edition was brought to the UK called T-5R at 241 BHP and later the 850R was available producing 250 BHP in manual guise, and 240BHP with the automatic box. If you open the bonnet, there should be a sticker on the left side end of the engine's cylinder head starting B5 (for benzine, 5 cylinder). The next two numbers refer to the displacement, and the fourth number indicates the number of valves per cylinder. This will enable you to identify the exact specification of the engine. eg B5204F indicates a 5 cylinder 2.0 litre engine with four valves per cylinder i.e. a 2.0 litre 20 valve. All Diesel models had an Audi sourced five pot direct injection turbo unit rated at 140 BHP. Hope this helps.

You must remove the center console and on the bottom side there are screws that hold window switch panel in place. Usualy about a 15-20 minute job to remove console, just make sure you plug in all other switches if any on reassembly. Hope this helps.

that would be a DoubleDIN sized radio. Its like stacking two normal DIN sized radios on top of one another. A DIN is the standard size for most aftermarket radios.

Turn key to accessory position. Press and hold trip meter reset button. Wait half a second and turn key to on position (not start) continuing to hold trip button. After a few seconds the service light will start flashing. At this point release the trip button, cycle the key and start the engine. The service light should be reset.

if u mean coolant level... check for an air lock ( interior heater on full and hot rev engine top up if nessesary) could be thermostat or headgasket too

It is most likely due to a hairline crack in the outlet pipe of the expansion tank. Common fault, ask any Volvo dealer. As the vehicles age, this plastic becomes hard & brittle, so small cracks are almost inevitable. Also check your coolant cap for the same sort of cracking.

There is one down past the turbo unit on the exhaust pipe (front)

then after the catalytic converter (under a plate that cover it and exhaust pipe you must remove 4 screws to get at the sensor) is the rear

you will need the special socket as the rear is kinda hidden

1. Turn on the ignition to the KPII position so the warning lamps on the dash are illuminated. Do not start the car. 2. Open the bonnet of the car and locate Diagnostic test port (A) behind the driver side headlamp. 3. Remove the cover and pull the jumper wire out of the holder in the cover. 4. Insert the jumper into terminal #7, then press button 4 times, wait approximately 5 seconds and the red lamp should glow continuously. You are now in the data reset mode. 5. Press the button 1 time and wait approximately 5 seconds for the lamp to glow again then press the button 5 times. After about 5 seconds the lamp will illuminate again, press the button 1 time and you will see the lamp flash repeatedly for a couple of seconds indicating that the service lamp has been properly reset. 6. If a mistake is made, simply switch the ignition off and back on to reset and start over.

Just in front of the ECU case. As you look into the engine compartment from the front of the car, there is a steel line to the left of the radiator core and in front of the ECU compartment. Look for a plastic cap, remove the cap and the port is revealed.
