It probably will NOT start AND will damage the engine! 2nd Answer It is true that if you try to start the engine, it won't start. But it won't damage your engine. This problem happens alot. When a belt breaks, only the lower part of the engine will actually rotate when you crank it, (like it was normally designed to do). However, the upper part (the camshaft where the 12 0r 16 valves are) won't rotate. The reason is that the belt is no longer attached to it bcuz it broke. When the belt is attached to the lower crankshaft and the upper camshaft, the pistens move up and down and the 12 or 16 valves open and close as it was designed to do. This is the result of when you put the key and start the engine. This is how engine parts operate: Key goes in and turns the sw. Power is applied to the starter The starter begins to turn the flywheel, which is attached to the engine. The flywheel is attached to the Lower Crankshaft, and so are the pistons and timing belt. As the crankshaft turns, the pistons begin an up and down movement. At the same time, (by means of the "TIMING BELT" which protrudes to the top of the engine and is attached to the upper Camshaft), the Camshaft also rotates. This in turn causes the valves to open and close. Also, the igniton or known as the distributor, has a rotor and is also rotated by this camshaft sending out electricity to each sparkplug wire and sparkplug. Now, the job of the valves, is to allow gas and air to enter and escape from the cyl. (piston chambers). So, when air and gas enter, the piston travels up on compression stroke..Meaning the gas and air are being compressed. Now, when this happens, the sparkplug fires in the cylinder/piston chamber and the piston is sent down on a power stroke, creating power for the transmission to use. So.. You can see that the timimg belt is an important part and needs careful attention when replacing. Hope this tour was of help. JP If you have a non interference engine nothing will be damaged and your car wont start. If you have a interference engine your pistons will hit and bend your valves therfore you will have to take your cylinder head off and replace valves and seats, headgasket and any other gaskets in the way to take the head off =$$$$ If you try to start the engine, nothing will happen, you will hear the car crank, but it wont start. If the timing belt breaks while you are driving, you will severely screw up your valves, unless you have a non-interference engine.

Depends on the bolt pattern. You may need wheel adapters to fit it though if they're different bolt patterns.

Ok so i figured this one out on my own. Remove the rear tire that the brake is locked up on, if the hand brake is on, lower the lever in the car. locate the e-brake wire on the rear of the disk brake/caliper. This should be behind the rotor and caliber and is identifible by the fact that it is not a hydraulic line. You should see that it is held in place by a bracket with tension on it, hence why the brake is "locked" remove the bracket holding in the brake line in place {not the hydraulic line!!} Once the bracket is removed simple pull out the e-brake line with a pair of pliers, Shazam! the brake should release. If not a few light taps with a hammer should help. Save the bracket for the e-brake as you will need it if you ever decide to fix it. This is a temporay fix with no real long term affects to your braking system, Except the fact that you will only have one E brake working.

My book says it is located under the dash on the drivers side near the hood release. But my'n is located behind the centre console accessed from the drivers side.

The camshaft TDC mark is located on the camshaft side of the pulley wheel. When the mark is level with the front reinforcing strip on the camshaft cover the camshaft will be at TDC.

The camshaft sensor is located in the distributor. I believe you have to replace the hole distributor.

THE BRAKE FLUID IS BELOW MINIMUM LEVEL IF THIS WARNING LIGHT COMES ON

On 1.8T motors the engine speed sensor is on the lower part of the engine block on the driverside. It is held in my one Allen head bolt. It should have about a foot of cable which leads to where it plugs into the wiring harness of your car under the intake manifold.

if its a 1.8 i believe it is .032 inches

It can as long as you have the ECM from the new engine and then you will need to get the module programmed to your immobilizer system if your 2001 GTI doesn't have an immobilizer system then no it won't work.

If its a VR6 it is a 12 valve

But vr6 isn' t a gti... the gti 3' series is 16v and the 4' series 20v

Dipstick should be marked

Open the fuel filler door. If it says "diesel fuel only" inside, it is a TDI; if it says "unleaded fuel only" it cannot be a TDI because TDI is a diesel engine. As to telling if it's a GTI...all GTIs I know of have thin red accent stripes, but if you got yours used it's possible the previous owner removed all signs of your car's GTIness.
