No. Windows update doesn't update drivers automatically in any circumstance. When installing a device, you can instruct the OS to go online and find the driver, but it's a manual process, not an automatic one.
Haven't confirmed this myself, but, according to Microsoft Official Academic Course, Windows 7 Configuration, Pg 139, "If Windows 7 is configured to use automatic updating, the system will download device drivers only for hardware that does not have a driver installed."
- To reformat your hand drive using Win98 you need a Win98 boot floppy with reformat and fdisk options on it. To get started, insert the floppy and reboot the system. First I had to install Windows 98, then insert the 98SE CD and go through the whole installation process again. I could never figure out why I had to first install 98 and then SE, but at least it works for me doing it that way.
- If you had Win98, and then bought the upgrade, you would need both disks to reinstall. Start with the new disk, the upgrade. At some point it will ask you to insert the old disk into the CD drive, so it can verify that you actually had a copy, and weren't just trying to get the upgrade because it costs less, without buying the original or older version.
