There is no such thing as the American flag. America consists of two continents, each country has its own flag. As does the USA.

Hoist and fly refer to the measurements of a flag. The hoist of a flag is the measurement of the side which is affixed to the halyard (rope). The fly of the flag is the measurement of the flag when extended perpendicular to the mast (flagpole). You could use the terms length and width, but hoist and fly are more descriptive and accurate.

Each regiment(Confederate or Union) carried one National Flag and one Regimental battle flag. The Union carried the Stars & Stripes and the regimental flag was usually Blue with an eagle for infantry. The Confederates carried their National Flag and a battle flag, which has been called the "Stars & Bars" or the "Rebel Flag". The National Flag of the Confederates States of America went through 3 variations. The 1st National Flag was an all white flag with upper corner having the Red square with the blue "X" cross with 13 stars---or a miniature of the battle flag. This flag had too much White in it and resembled a surrender flag. The 2nd National Flag was RED with one horizontal White bar that divided the flag into 3 equal stripes. The 3rd National Flag was a white flag with a wide Red vertical stripe on the outside edge. The upper corner again had the Rebel "Stars & Bars" emblem. The Battle Flag carried by the regiments varied greatly. Most were square instead of being rectangular. Many were the "Stars & Bars" as described above. This flag was typical for regiments in Virginia. The regiment would record their battle record by sewing on the names of the places where they fought. These were added in the red field or sometimes on the wide white borders along the edge or the cross. Many units created battle flags based on their State's flag or crest. Texas flags resembled the current Texas State flag. Battle flags of South Carolina had the Palmetto tree, Louisianna flags had the pelican. General Hardee adopted a flag for his regiments that was a dark Blue flag with a round White circle in the center and a wide White trim. This became known as the "Hardee flag" and was prevelant among units in what became the Army of Tenessee commanded by General Brag. There are 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes. There are red stripes at the top and bottom of the flag, with seven stripes (6/10 as wide as the flag) next to the blue field and six full-width stripes below, so that the stripe under the blue union field is white.

The Benin flag consists of a green vertical stripe on the left side and a yellow horizontal stripe on top of a red horizontal stripe on the right side of the flag. The yellow and red stripes are of equal size.

The colors of the Benin flag are explained in the Benin's national anthem as such - the green represents hope and revival; the red symbolizes the courage of ancestors; and the yellow represents the country's wealth. The colors are traditional Pan-African colors.

An Alabama gentleman by the name of Nicola Marshall who lived in Tuscaloosa, Ala was origanaly from the country we know as Austria. The flag of Austria then and today is three horizontal bars of red ,white ,red. At the time Austria was not an independent country,however the Austrian people have always identifed with their flag of red, white, red. Upon Austrian independence this became their national flag. Because Nicola Marshall was from Austria it is only natural that he would be encourged to use those emblems and such from his native country. Nicola Marshall also helped design the uniforms for the Confederate army both enlisted and officers. If one looks at the style of uniforms then in use in mid 19th centry Austria and the confederate army they are both similar in colour and style as those that were used in Austria at the time. To answer the question the First National Confederate Flag or the Stars and Bars was heavly influenced by the current flag of Austria. Nicola simply added a blue canton [square] and the proper number of stars repersenting the newly birthed Confederate States of America.

The meaning of the three stars has changed over time. Originally the three stars were supposed to symbolize Iraq's aspiration to join the United Arab Republic (UAR), which was a union between Egypt and Syria. Under Saddam Hussein, the meaning of the three stars was changed to the three fundamental tenets of the Ba'ath party: Unity, Freedom, Socialism.

The U.S. flag should be illuminated if flown at night. If there is no light source nearby, the flag should be taken down at sunset. Flags of other countries may have different guidelines, so it is important to refer to the specific flag code of that country.
