What is the difference of steel and stainless steel?

Stainless steel in metallurgical definition is a steel that contains ~14% or more Chromium. Other alloying elements such as Nickel can also improve steel's stain resistance properties.

The amount of free Chromium, i.e. not tied up in carbides determines steel's stain resistance ability. Higher carbon content leaves less free Chromium in the alloy, which explains why some of the high end stainless steels with more % of Chromium are less stain resistant than lower grade stainless steels with less Chromium and Carbon.

However, given time and conditions all steels will rust.

For more information on alloying elements effects on the steel see the related links.

What are the fire rating properties of expanded polystyrene and rock and wool insulation?

Gosh, I couldn't say...but, if you're asking because you're trying to choose which one to use I have to say DONT use polystyrene..not in the loft anyway! In the loft, the beads will attach themselves to your wiring, over time, and eat their way through them. And are a fire hazard. BUT, if it's for in your walls, I believe polybeads have a higher u-value thus insulate better. Rockwool is a very good product though, been around for decades, is inert and also used in hospitals (internal walls) to stop the spread of fire.

What is the Difference between carbon steel and hi speed steel?

carbon steels are steels which contain upto 2% carbon and some other trace elements such as silicon, manganese etc.,

Tool steels have greater amount of alloying than the alloy steels of iron. alloying elemnts include chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, carbon, vanadium, nitrogen in the form of nitrides, manganese, silicon, cobalt.

These two mainly differ in the pattern in which they are manufactured. tool steels are manufactured from electric furnace techniques where as most carbon steels are manufactured from conventional melting processes. This is done to exhibit good alloy characteristics and impart greater refined structure which cannot be obtained from the conventional say a cuppola furnace or a bessemer furnace.
