I have a friend that claims to be emo but i do not think she really is considering there are never any cuts on her wrists but i don't want her to hurt herself what should i do?

Does she actually discuss hurting herself, even if there are not noticeable wounds? If she talks about cutting, does she claim it makes her feel less stress? Is she unnaturally depressed, has stopped taking an interest in things she previously enjoyed? If so, then that is an issue; something that can be greatly assisted by your support, but also where she does need outside intervention (from her family, mental health professionals). If she does any of the above, then you should encourage her to talk to her family about it, or talk to them if she refuses to do so; it would be supporting and assisting her, even if she becomes angry at you for doing it. However, merely claiming to be 'emo' can mean she is just a fan of that style of music, or fashion, or she enjoys emo-style writings. She may simply want to be seen as 'emo' to attract a certain type of person. It doesn't necessarily mean she is (unnaturally) depressed or that she cuts herself, unless she has behaviors that the previous paragraph mentioned. Emo is as much a societal trend as 'Goth' is. I'd likely be classified as a metalhead but I don't eviscerate virgins, worship Baphomet or torch churches by the full moon. Your friend simply may have different interests than you.

How is physiological dependence related to addiction?

To keep it simple, physiological dependence occurs when the individual needs the presence of a chemical in his or her system in order to feel relatively normal. At that point, using has become less an option than a need.

The entire addiction syndrome includes physiological dependence, but also social, emotional and spiritual issues that stem from the effects of the chemicals and the need to keep them flowing, such as lying, making excuses, stealing, loss of spiritual values such as compassion, forgiveness and joy, and so forth -- along with an overpowering fear that somehow the chemicals will not be available when needed, and the fear of withdrawal and the changes that accompany abstinence.

Note: I use "chemicals" instead of "drugs" because some addictions are related to self-generated brain chemicals, not just stimulation from drugs.

Can you wash your hands too much?

Yes. I am very OCD about washing my hands. It is bad. I wash after the bathroom, or touch money, eat anything, touch doorknobs, clean tables/dishes, animals...I am also a server at a restaurant where we have no busser, and I probably wash my hands at least 20 times per shift. I constantly have very very dry, cracked, bleeding, sore, red, tops of my hands. I just thought I had dry skin in general. Now, I am not a health care professional or anything, but my Mom who is a Nurse Practitioner said that you can wash your hands too much and it can cause some sort of yeast infection and then actually cause more problems down the road due to the fact that the cracks in your hands are open to the outside world and could in fact contract a bacteria or infection. I am going to try and be more conscious about how often I wash my hands now. PS- My Mom said that it is mostly the soap that drys out my skin. Rinsing with water will never cause the problem that I am having. So continue to rinse away!

Why do people gamble all the time?

Most people gamble because they see gambling as a quick and easy way to make money.

While the previous answer is correct, there is much more to it. Gambling can be very addictive. To some it is the thrill of "beating" the house or another player (poker). Some people gamble in casinos because they enjoy the interaction with other players, some people gamble because they want to be the one to hit the mega jackpots, and some people gamble because they are truly addicted to gambling. The worst thing that could happen to a person who makes a bet the first time is to win, it gives them the false sense of being a winner and that they can always win, thus they become addicted. People that gamble "all the time" are addicted to gambling and need help in overcoming their addiction.

How does television viewing affect behavior?

There are two major dangers to watching excessive TV. The first is that people who are sitting in front of a TV are not exercising, and lack of exercise and its complications are the leading health problem in the US. This is a behavioral issue, not a biological one.

The second is that people who are watching TV are having information and entertainment streamed into their heads without having to do any original or critical thinking on their own. This results in millions of people who simply accept what they hear without either considering the source or discussing it with anyone -- except to agree with what they just heard. This creates major problems as well. While psychological, it affects behavior such as relationships with other people, other nations, voting, ability to make decisions in ones best interest, and so forth.
