You can, but you'd better put a fuse in-line, next to the positive battery post, otherwise when it rubs through, (it will) you will have a red-hot wire that will damage one of many things, including your battery or setting the whole engine compartment on fire. Better that you find out why you are having the problem that makes you need this fix. I suspect you are having a problem getting the battery to charge. Better check: your battery...the battery cables, the alternator fuse, the fuse links under the fuse box and MOST importantly, all the grounds to the body. (There is one next to the fender by the battery, one on the passenger side connecting the engine to the strut tower (it unplugs). I added a ground to the firewall and connected it to the fuel rail. Best bet is to find a friend who can do it or get a 20 dollar Chiltons manual for the car. It's quite a hassle do to the placing of the alternator and other parts that are extremely close...note that I have done this repair and afterwards, after a few months the belt would squeal when cold until warmed up...retentioned the belt which lasted for about 1 month and now it squeals whenever too much power is drawn from the battery IE. the rear defrost, headlights, and high heat are on...this is with a brand new battery too!

If it's a 3.3 litre engine like I have, you have to raise the front end up high enough to sit under unfortunately. You have to be able to reach a plate with two bolts beneath the alternator to release it to be freed from the top, and no matter how much a contortionist you are, you CANNOT do it from the top. One the lower bar is unbolted, you can remove the alternator from the mounting plate and plugs... and while you're down there...replace the three plugs you skipped the last time you did a tune up because you couldn't reach them ;-)

- Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
- Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands (not totally necessary)
- Disconnect the wire harness from the alternator electrical connection. The wire harness is located below the first cable you disconnected.
- loosen the alternator lower mounting bolt.Working from above,loosen the upper adjustment lockbolt,back off the adjustment bolt,swivel the alternator toward the engine and then release the drivebelt from the alternator pulley.
- Unscrew and remove the alternator upper bolt. The bottom bolt just needs to be loose because the bracket on the engine is slotted and it will slide right out (this will save you time because that lower bolt is a PITA to get out). It will take a little effort, but pull the alternator towards the upper rad support (this is the direction of the slot).
- The hard part is actually removing the alternator out of the engine area. It's a very tight fit. The best way to get it out through the top. Disconnect the connector going to the rad fan and remove the passenger side radiator fan (two 10mm bolts at the top). Place a piece of cardboard over the rad so you dont mess it up when you pull the alternator out (it is tight!).
Clean both ends of both battery cables and make SURE there is a good ground cable between the engine and body. If this fails, take it to auto zone and have them check the alternator output.
You might have a defective electronic device (radio, computer, etc) drawing current when the car is turned off. Using an ammeter and with the ignition turned to off, remove each fuse one by one, and check the current through that circuit by placing the leads of the ammeter across the contacts where the fuse was. Normal readings will be zero, or just a few milliamps. (Start with your ammeter on its highest range - i.e. 10 or 20 amps) A reading more than say 50 milliamps might indicate that there is too much current flowing through that circuit. After checking a circuit, replace the fuse and go to the next one. The radio, computer, and alarm system will probably always have a small amount of current running through them. The computer and the radio have memory and a clock that require power all the time. When you find the circuit that has a large current draw, remove each device on that circuit one by one while measuring the current again, until you find the defective device. The defective device may also be warm to the touch because of the current flowing through it. I have a defective radio in one of my cars that draws 2 amps of power when the car is turned off, and it quickly drains the battery.

Some car stereo systems require a PIN number be entered after reconnecting power. Some cars require a special procedure to recalibrate the computer because information stored in memory is lost when power is removed. Some transmissions on newer cars need to calibrate theirself for smooth shifting after power has been reconnected. An alarm system will often lose information about the remotes that are used with it.

The only way to repair a belt is to replace it. It's kinda a pain in the butt on this car, I know I did it today. There is a 8mm tensioning bolt toward the front of the car, between the alternator and the air conditioner compressor. Loosen the 14mm bolt in the center of the idler pulley, and then loosen the 8mm tensioner bolt till the belt can be slipped off. This takes a great deal of patience and small hands are helpful too. I had to use a small wrench as there is no room for a ratchet. Reverse the process to install the new belt.

When you finished this there are three bolts too go holding the alternator in place. Loosen these and slip the alternator out from under the belt. I find this easier than letting the tension off of the belt saves the pain of setting it back up. Install in the reverse of this. LAST THING TOO DOO IS HOOK UP THE BATTERY!

first remove neg cable from battery loosen the bolt on the top of alt. a gear wrench is the best. at this point remove the small nut from alt on back that holds heavy gauge wire, this is your charging wire. Also carefully undo the clip fro the alt this is your fielding or senser wire , there are two wires in one. Then next you must remove bottom bracket bolt. This all should come out under the front of engine. if you have trouble two bolts hold the bracket to engine and this will require some tonge twist and a spitual cuss to remove. Answer on mine I found it easer to hold the engine with a ratchet strap then remove the upper dog bone and then slowly and carefully let the engine tip forwarded just about an inch then remove the alternator out the top I guess that some of the fieros had a small removable panel in the passenger side wheel well to get to the alternator but mine is an early run 84 and dose not have this option.

They are no fun at all, be prepared to say a few cuss words and possibly throw a few tools. And if you are a beer drinker make sure you have a cold 6 pack ready before you start. You will need to remove the right front wheel, the fender liner, and the CV axle to get the alternator out. Remove the belt first, then there are three bolts holding the alternator on. Along with one cable bolted to the alternator and a push connector. Make sure the negative battery cable is disconnected before you do all of this. Without the use of a lift you should be prepared to spend several hours doing this job. When I replaced mine I spent the extra few bucks and got the lifetime warranty one from Autozone. On the non-DOHC Vulcan engines the alternator can be replaced in about 15 minutes.
I just replaced the alternator on a 96 DOHC Taurus recently and since I had just replaced the engine last year I knew it might be tough in the car here is how I did it
1.Support the car on the passenger side rear frame by the rocker panel
2.Remove the passenger side engine cradle mount bolts and the front inner fender plastic panel.
3. Lower the engine cradle and remove the alternator
This is the easiest way to do this, took about 30 minutes and the alternator was out!
