What is the most widely used chemical leavening agent?

Baking powder is the most commonly used chemical leavening agent.

Baking powder is a dry chemical leavening agent used to increase the volume and lighten the texture of baked goods. Baking powder works by release carbon dioxide gas into the batter or dough through acid base reaction, causing bubbles in the wet mixture to expand and therefore leavening the mixture. It is used instead of yeast where fermentation flavors may be undesirable or where the batter lacks the elastic structure to hold gas bubbles for more than a few minutes.

Most commercially available baking powders are made up of an alkaline component (typically baking soda, known as sodium bicarbonate), one or more acid salts, and an inert starch (cornstarch in most cases, though potato starch may also be used)

Baking pans hold batter or dough while they are baking.

A timer, when properly set, keeps track of how much time is left before the food is done baking.

A dough hook helps mix dough by hand.

How long do you bake a quiche?

Here is a link with instructions on "Blind Baking" which is what it's called when you simply need to bake your pie crust before filling it. It instructs to bake the crust at 350F for 15-20 minutes if you are just pre-baking and will be baking it more after adding the filling. Bake for 30-35 minutes if you need the crusts completely baked. I just finished baking my crusts, and I didn't have anything to weigh the crust down with, so it has a few air bubbles (which can be pushed down if you catch them while the crust is still soft) and on one the side partially rolled down instead of staying up on the edge. Other than that, they look like great pie crusts. :D http://www.dianasdesserts.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/bakingtips.pastry/Pastry.cfm

Can you bake on a ceramic plate?

Technically you could put them in the oven, but if you are planning to turn the oven on, I wouldn't recommend it.

If the dishes are plastic, as most dishes labeled 'dishwasher and microwave safe' are, then they will melt if used in the oven. A microwave is safe as its only a few minutes, and a dishwasher uses hot water.

What sweet recipes kids can make alone?

I have two sweet desserts that kids can make alone with a little bit of adult supervision, and they are both fun and delicious.

#1 - Baked Apples. Use an apple corer to remove the center of an apple. Fill with brown sugar, which you can mix in raisins and/or nuts. Dot with a bit of butter and wrap in a large square of foil, with the apple upright and the foil closing over the top. Place in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until the apple is tender and the sugar has melted into an syrupy bit of yumminess.

#2 - Banana Boats. We used to love these when camping. Take a ripe banana (not brown ) and slice along the top curve of the skin (leave the skin on) into about 1/2 inch of the banana itself. Fill with mini marshmallows and chocolate chips. Wrap in foil and place in a 350 degree oven for about 15 - 20 minutes or until the marshmallows and chocolate melt and the banana is soft. Open and dig in with a spoon! If you are camping, you can throw these right onto the hot coals to cook.
