Anything but DOT 5...DOT 3 is what was in it at the factory, DOT 4 is better and Synthetic Brake Fluid is also good. DOT 5 is Silicone Brake Fluid; it was invented for the Army and they're the only ones who should use it.

If no air got into the abs hcu then bleeding the brakes is done just as it would be on other vehicles. If air did get into the hcu or if you disconnected any brake like at the master cylinder or hcu then you will need to take it to a ford dealership to have them bleed the hcu and brakes for you.

No, the master cylinder is not dot# specific. The Dot# is more important based on the brake setup at the wheel(where the heat is generated). Racing/high temp. brake setups need the high dot# fluid to prevent the fluid from boiling. If the fluid boils the the pedal will get soft and the braking performance drops dramatically.

Fill master cylinder, open one bleeder at a time (furthest from master 1st, then 2nd furthest & so on). Have someone in the car, pump the pedal 3 times & hold it down. Open the 1st bleeder and let out the fluid until the brake pedal goes down about 1/2 way. Repeat this procedure till no more air comes out of the bleeder. then move on to the next wheel and do it again. Make sure the master cylinder does not go empty!! Also try not to go past 1/2 way down on the brake pedal while bleeding to minimize the chance of damaging the seals in the master cylinder.

Tip: On some Brake boots: the 'bleeder' is a grease fitting next to the fluid line. Do not attempt to grease this fitting. It is met to be unscrewed to relieve air for the cylinder.

open the hood and look in the upper right side of the motor compartment, there you will see a rectangle shape body with brake lines comming out of the back of it. from the top view it looks like a lid with a wire holder securing the top down. with a screw driver place it under the wire and push, slightly pri and lift the wire towards the passenger side that secures the lid. after that remove the lid or cap and fill the resivour.

The brake and clutch cylinders are on the driver's side floorboard. Check under the carpet. Make sure that you use the correct fluid- don't use the first bottle of brake fluid you find. Castrol GT is what's usually used, but silicone fluid will also work well. Don't mix the two types.
