How do you replace the alternator on a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird?

The only hard part is that you've got to get a big crescent wrench or pipe wrench onto the square extrusion on the belt tensioner and relieve the pressure so that you can slip the belt off (and back onto) the alternator. Once you've done that (the tensioner is one of the small pulleys on the side of the engine that the belt is wrapped around - it's very firm but WILL move with enough pressure; WATCH your knuckles!!! If you slip it can hurt like heck!)it's a simple matter of pulling the wiring plug off and undoing the bolts that hold the alternator.

There should be a belt/pulley diagram sticker on the radiator support near the front of the car that will show you the belt routing, make sure that the belt goes back on the right way around the proper pulleys! It can take a minute to make sure you've got it wound round everything the right way (and again, watch your knuckles with that tensioner!) Good luck!

Where is the rear speaker located in a 1969 buick skylark convertible?

It should be in the middle of the ledge behind the back seat. (Or you could turn the radio on and find it that way....) You can also open the trunk and look for it that way.

How many spark plugs are in a 96 Buick Skylark?

A 6-cylinder has SIX and a 4-cylinder has FOUR spark plugs.... Am I missing something here?

How do you remove rear speakers in a 1992 Buick Skylark?

You could either do it the hard way by taking out the back seat (no kidding) or you can empty out your trunk, get some pliers and twist the screws on the speakers upwards and remove them through the open space that way (again, no kidding). I have a '95 Skylark and it worked that way when I replaced my speakers. Use #4 bolts, nuts and lockwashers when putting the new speakers in. The trickiest part is getting all 4 bolts through the 4 holes at once.

How do you replace the alternator on a 1996 Buick Regal?

Best to get a shop manual for this operation, if you have not replaced it before. Usually there is an "Idler Pulley" on many late model cars that is "spring loaded". You "Bias" this pulley (usually with a socket wrench) so that the serpentine belt has enough slack in it so you can remove it. Then you disconnect the Positive Battery cable, disconnect the "Field Wire" harness and Positive battery lead from the alternator, unbolt and remove the alternator. Reverse procedure to install new alternator. TommyTrouble

How do you remove the thermostat located on a 1992 Buick Skylark?

To remove the thermostat you first have to remove the throttle body, it is on the top of the motor on the right it has one bolt and two nuts holding it down. When you remove the throttle body disconnect the air intake tube and make sure all hoses and electrical connectors are removed, the throttle cables do not have to bedisassembled to remove the throttle body. Move the throttle body up and away from the intake to gain access to the thermostat housing. Make sure you have something under the upper radiator hose to catch the coolant and loosen the hose clamp and remove the hose from the housing. the housing has two 13mm bolts holding it down remove them. If the thermostat doesn't come out by hand use some pliers to pull it out. Make sure the rubber gasket on the thermostat comes out with it. Also when you put in the new thermostat make sure it has a new gasket on it. If the thermostat and gasket come separately make sure you put the gasket on the thermostat with the pointed edge facing the engine block. Make sure you have a good throttle body gasket and it wasn't damaged in disassembly Reassemble in reverse of disassemble make sure all hose clamps are tight and electrical connectors are connected. Finally top off the radiator reservoir. P.S. don't try to remove the exhaust pipe on top of the engine to get to the thermostat bolts, it is impossible to get off unless you remove the exhaust manifold not worth the hassle the throttle body is easier to remove. Good Luck

Is it worth replacing the engine on a 1996 Buick Skylark?

The question you should be asking yourself is is this car still worth it?, not to put you down but an enging swap is at best of times labour intensive and expensive.

How do you find water build up in a 93 Buick Skylark that seems like it is leaking through to the drivers side floor board?

This is a problem with all GM N-body cars in these years. The water is coming through the firewall. I had it fixed for $350 at a GM dealer but the problem has come up again. There should be a recall. After I dried out the carpet, I stuffed some towels where the carpet meets the firewall and change them when they get wet from rain or from washing the car. It's a hassle but I don't want to blow more money on something that shouldn't be a problem in the first place. Who designs these things?

For my car's case, it's definitely not the heater core. I even experimented by washing it and noticing water coming in there.

Update: I think the problem originates with the plastic that covers the blower motor. Mine actually started falling apart (literally) so I removed what was left of it and I don't seem to get anymore water entering the car (Not that I recommend taking the cover off).

AnswerUnless you are driving in rain your heater core is probably leaking. After driving the car for a while check behind the gas pedal and see if it has water. The pipes for the heater core enter the engine compartment just to the right of the gas pedal. To change it our yourself buy a book on your vehicle at the local auto parts store. The aftermarket heater cores (to me) are just as good as the metal/plastic original manufacture cores, and cost less. Answerive got the same problem! except it happens on the passenger side if it were the heater core though, you'd think the coolant level would go down right? AnswerI've got the same problem with a leak on the drivers side only, but a different cause. The door gasket has a slit to allow water to pass. It got clogged with sand, once I cleaned it out the problem went away. The passenger side has a different style gasket and doesn't seem to have the problem.

Where is the fuel pump relay on a 1993 Buick Skylark?

The fuel pump relay is located in the engine compartment in the middle of the firewall. There are 4/5 relays mounted in a black box maybe 4X9 inches, You must remove the box from the firewall and then the back cover from the box to access the relays, The fuel pump relay has several wires. Dk grn-wht, blk-wht, 2 pk-whts, red, gry. The gry lead is the hot lead to fuel pump when key is on for 2 seconds or car is running. The red lead goes to the "prime" connect over by the driver fender and close to the firewall and will deliver 12V to fuel pump when relay is not operated. I hope this helps someone as it took me 2 hours to find the bloody relay. Cheeto

What is limp mode?

Your engine management and maybe even your transmission is controlled by the ECU. As you know, all computers crash, all software has bugs, and mechanical equipment fails. As such, many ECU units are fitted with a 'limp home mode'. When it detects that something semi-serious is wrong, it enters the limp mode, which means that the engine won't rev beyond a pre-programmed speed, you can't accelerate very fast, or you may indeed be speed-restricted to 40 mph or similar. The transmission may even stay in one or two gears. Bad? Well, no, not really: The alternative would be to either let you drive at regular speeds, with the danger of letting you trash your car (expensive repair, means happy repair people, but angry driver), or stopping you from going anywhere (expensive recovery and stranded on the side of the road means happy recovery company, but angry driver).

Where is the PRNDL switch located on a 1997 Skylark?

Not sure about a switch, but there is a fuse for it in the fuse box.

You have a 1995 Buick Skylark you cannot find the radiator cap could someone please tell you the location?

You have to use the coolant reservoir. You'll notice it's marked as a pressure cap. If it's loose, you'll notice as your temp guage will keep going up and down instead of being steady. Many vehicles do not have a cap ON THE RADIATOR, but instead have a pressure cap on the coolant reservoir. I don't own a Buick Skylark and haven't worked on one, so I can only guess with you.
