Your hood release is broken how do you open your hood?
I have this problem. I was taught to stand by the front, driver's tire with the driver door wide open. Reach inside the car with one hand to hit the hood release while pulling up on the hood where the hood ends and the windshield begins (otherwords, the top of the hood) with the other hand. Lifting it up as much as you can will somehow pop the hood. Then, walk around to the front of the car and procede to open the hood as usual. I've been told that the hood shocks are worn. You can also have someone lift the hood while you hit the hood release.
How do you change the spark plugs on a 97 Cadillac Catera?
The spark plugs are under the intake manifold aka upper plenum ,in the center of the valve cover gaskets , on a 1997 Catera. Unplug the hoses and electrical wire clip/connections (you may want to mark the 4 hoses in the back for reattachment at removal), unbolt the intake manifold or aka upper plenum , you will then see the wires that go into the center of the valve covers , pull the plug boot and you can access the spark plugs. usually boots and wires covered in oil recommend replacement of valve cover gaskets at the same time. If covered in oil replacement of spark plug wires isa must.

What should it cost to replace an oil cooler on a 1997 catera?
This is a major failure of the Catera and it happens very often. I own a 1997 Catera and I currently have the same issue. The Chevrolet dealership quoted $1,444.76 for total repair costs. This included 6 1/2 hours of labor $422.50 @ $65.00 per hour) the cooler itself purchased from GM ($729.85), O ring ($7.95), Inlet pipe ($77.13) , Outlet pipe ($76.62), and the replacement of fresh oil, radiator fluid, and a flush of the coolant system ( $48.93) and $81.78 in total tax.
Now that being said, this amount is way, way, way over priced! If you buy the parts yourself you will need to purchase an oil cooler (comes with the oil cooler cover), a new set of gasket rings (some kits come with these, should be 4 total), and a tube of silicon bead along with 5 quarts of 5w30 oil and a bottle of Dextron coolant. Total parts for new aftermarket pieces if have found to be as follows:
Oil cooler kit = $268.00 (shipping incl)
Set of upper gaskets = $7.95
Tube of silicon gasket = $8.96
5 quarts of 5w30 motor oil = $18.95
1 bottle of concentrated Dextron coolant = $24.98
The total cost of parts are = $328.84
The estimated time for the project as per manuals I have read is 4-5 hours. If you are mechanically inclined you may attempt the change out yourself and save a bundle or find a certified mechanic that has experience with Cateras' and have them do it for you. With a coolant flush you would be looking at 5-6 hours. If you can get a certified mechanic for around $45-50 an hour your total cost SHOULD BE:
$619.84
I am planning on replacing the part myself but only do so if you are quite confident in working on engines. Part of the process is to remove the engine intake and plenium. Not a big ordeal but anytime you get into the guts of an engine you need to be confident you can put it back together right including the right torque specs for the bolts.
Hope this helps....
Why would the fuel door not open on a 1997 Cadillac Catera?
There is an electronic release button located on the dash that activates a solenoid which prevents other people from getting to your gas filler cap for security. Solenoid could be shot, or fuses, or a relay. Buy a test light and start tracing the circuit or bring it to the dealership.

How do you change heater control valve 2000 catera?
I changed mine just recently. As best I can remember, this is the way it played out:
The heater control valve is located behind the planum (the very big aluminium-looking cover on the top part of the engine). If you trace your hands to the back, past the 4 vacuum hoses, you will see it - it's cylindrical with a 3 fat hoses coming out of the side of the shaft below the cylindrical head. You will have to remove the planum for easy access though, and for that you will need a torx socket (I cant remember the size, maybe a 3/8 or whatever that comes out to in metric). Remove the torx bolts and lift the planum straight up, being careful not to damage the "O" rings underneath for the intake manifold. Oh, you will also have to loosen up the intake hoses in the front for easier access, and also remove the vacuum hoses in the back. Once you have that done, it's time to remove the HCV. It is attached to the hoses with clips. You will need a pair of needle-nosed pliers for this, but I would suggest that you get the ones that have a bent beak, or else it may take you significantly longer amount of time to loosen up the pressure clips that hold the hoses. Squeeze the tabs on the pressure ring and slide it down the hose a bit, then remove and replace with the new HCV.
Hope this helps.

Where do you add transmission fluid on a Cadillac Catera?
Have you pulled out the dip stick to check your trans fluid? You put the fluid in the same hole. Pour slowly as it takes the fluid slow. The transmission is a sealed unit, there is no dip stick. Only if it leaks does it need to be serviced. no, the check area is under the car. you take a bolt out and you can see if the fuid goes up to the top of the threaded part, best to be done by a service center. The 4L30E transmission, like their BMW (92-98 4L30E) conterparts are a totally sealed unit. The service hole to check the fluid is also the where you add fluid. This sealed unit is filled like a manual tranmission, thru the service/check hole. be patient when doing this to make sure you have adequate amount of fluid in. when it takes no more and slightly dribbles out of the service hole then it is full.
Where is trasmission fluid gauge located on 1997 Cadillac Catera?
The Catera transmission does not have a dip stick or gauge to check the oil. The transmission is a sealed unit, there is no need to add oil.

How do you replace the head gasket on a Cadillac catera?
go to cadillacforums.com and join the catera/cimarron group (retired caddy names). find your answer there. the job really can be done in your driveway or garage, you'll just need a few tools that you might not have (30mm socket, etc.) that you can get nearly anywhere. the manuals are available on eBay and other sources, plus the guys in the catera forum have done this many, many times. it takes about 2-4 hours depending on your basic familiarity with engines. you should also update your heat exchanger (aka oil cooler under your intake, on top of your motor) with a new design one. the hcv (heater control valve) could be done as well. if you need to do a timing chain replacement, you'll need a special tool (which you can buy for $4-500 or rent for about $130) for that. it sounds like a lot, but updating these with NON Cadillac parts, will save you huge $$$ down the line. while your at it, there are a coupla plastic covers you can get in aluminum from European opel engine (same car) sources that won't warp like the plastic caddy ones. all of this is relatively cheap (hundreds, not thousands), so dig in and learn about your catera... we did!
PS - the other route is to update your engine with a 2000 model or newer rebuilt or even (possibly) brand-new drop in engine from eBay or a motor seller. just Google it, they're out there for under $2k, shipped.
