If the "check engine" light is on, use a code scanner to find out what's wrong. You can borrow, rent or buy a code scanner from most auto parts retailers. Sometimes they'll even show you how to connect it and how to read the results.

Instead, it has a micro-switch which is attached to the back side of the speedometer. This switch is operated by a cam which is driven by the odometer mechanism. The switch is suppossed to turn the "Check Engine Light" on at 50K,80K,and 100K miles. This is to have you take the car back to the dealer for service of some kind - the owners manual does not state what service is required. I just disconnected the micro-switch so the light can be illuminated by the ECM whene the is an actual problem, not an interval. Theres a reset switch hidden by the drivers side speaker, you have to reset it every 2000 or 3000 miles, just flip it to the other side and next time flip it the other way.

The check engine light comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle.

Generally, a check engine light is lit when there is a problem in the emissions or somthing that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions.

You need a scan tool. Most "Autozone" type parts stores will read codes for free.

The check engine light comes on when the engine computer detects a malfunction and sets a trouble code.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

With my VW Polo 2000 I have similar behaviour. In my case from time to time the orange lamp "Check" and some times "EPC" start lighting. I cannot see neither hear any engine malfunction. After several times this happened, I found out a solution. It seems that after I open and close the engine lid, both lamp reset and the light disapear.

If you do not repair the problem that caused the light to come on then it will never go off. If you repair the problem then remove the negative battery cable for 10 minutes and the light may go off. If it comes back on you did not repair the problem. If the light does not reset then the light will have to be reset with a OBD2 scan tool.

Got your air con on? Are the revs dropping and climbing as the compressor kicks in and out?

I had this problem and although it didnt stall, it was pretty close - which is a problem in an automatic when you're sat at the lights in rush hour.

I had a new battery fitted and, once the new one was reconnected, the Engine Management computer seemed to reboot and to "learn" how to deal with the issue and it's fine now.

Replace EGR Vacuum Regulator (EVR) Solenoid and DPFE sensor after testing from here

or just unhook egr valve and plug hose - reset engine light by removing battery cable. Plug vacuum hose back in for emmissions test.
