chevy motors have a number sequence on the back of the block where the bell housing bolts up.you can take this number and decode it at certain auto parts stores or in a manual. * also look on the front of the engine in front of the pass. side cylinder head.there is a stamping pad that has numbers stamped into them. these will help narrow the year and application down. it is also possible that the casting numbers mentioned on the back of the engine to have been used on a few different engines ie..307,305,350,etc...if there are no numbers on the pad in the front of the engine then that means the block has been remanufactured at one of the large engine rebuilders.they remove or grind these numbers off for some dumb reason.

Can you use 305 heads on a 350?
Yes, you can use 305 heads on a 350 engine, but there are some considerations to keep in mind. The 305 heads have smaller combustion chambers, which can increase the compression ratio of the 350 engine, potentially leading to more power. However, this setup may also restrict airflow, limiting the engine's performance at higher RPMs. It's important to ensure compatibility with the intake manifold and other components for optimal performance.
What is the weight of caprice engine 1990?
I've never weighed a 305, but a complete 350 with alum. heads and intake, water pump, alternator, etc. is right at 450 pounds.
Alum. heads are 25 lbs. lighter than iron heads, so add 50 lbs. for iron heads and an additional 20 lbs. for a cast iron intake.
If it is happening when the engine is warmed up and it won't start again until it cools, it could possibly be vapor lock. Make sure the fuel lines aren't running too close to the exhaust, or resting against any part of the engine. If temperature isn't an issue, then check the fuel filter and fuel pump.

Do the 305 vortec and 350 vortec have the same heads?
No. The 350 has bigger valves. While you CAN put the 305 heads on the 350, (I can't imagine why you would actually want to) you can NOT put the 350 heads on the 305. Because of the 305's small bore, the valves on the 350 heads will hit the cylinder block.
How do you set your rocker arms on a 1989 Chevy 305?
With the engine at #1 TDC you can set 1, 2, 5, & 7 intakes, and 1, 3, 4, & 8 exhausts. Rotate the engine one revolution (#6 TDC) to set the rest.
When you're adjusting the backlash, tighten the nut on the rocker until there is no up and down movement of the pushrod. When you get to the point of zero backlash, tighten an additional 1/2 turn for preload.
