I have a 99 Taurus same thing happened to me . It is the shift cable.
Next time it does that, moving the gear selector as you try to start it. It could be the neutral safety switch that's just being temperamental.
If THAT's not the problem, check the starter. A failing solenoid can act that way, but don't bother to replace JUST the solenoid. It's integrated into the starter and not worth the trouble it takes to replace just a solenoid... just have the starter tested.
The hard way...listen to other people. Easy way, remove the bell housing cover (4 bolts), remove the starter bolts (2), push back end of starter up to get to solenoid nuts(2). Drop starter onto ground. Install new starter in reverse order. I fought for 6 hours trying to get it out every other way until I figured out this one. Lousy GM engineers....

It is on the right hand side of the steering column by the column support bracket. It is tucked in behind and you need to feel for the round device. It can pretty hard to find.

What kind of machine work do you need to do to a 350 engine to build a 355 Chevy engine?
A 355 is a 350 bored 0.030 thousand over.
You will need new pistons rings and all the bearings.
You will also need a complete gasket set, New oil pump and pick-up screen.
If you use the same camshaft and lifters they will have to be marked were they came from and put back in the same hole they came out of.
New timing chain and gears too. You should have a valve job done on the heads.
There is nothing special about a 355 CID engine. But it could be if you spent about 3'000 dollars on engine parts. You will also have to take it to a machine shop to get the block bored and the heads done.
How do you install an oil pan gasket?
Drain the oil then jack the car up and unbolt the the oil pan and take the old gasket off. Take a razor to it if there is still some pieces of gasket material on it but be sure not to cut into the surface where the gasket goes on (the pan) be absolutely sure that you use gasket sealer (one coat on one side of gasket, one on the other) or it will not seal good. Then bolt it back up do not overtighten the any of the screws when the rachet gets a bit harder to turn STOP right there! It would be best to do this when you do an oil change
