Recieved a cost estimate of 1,000 to replace fuel pump in 96 Camaro. In addtion to the fuel tank, dealer also said drive shaft and axel will have to be removed. 4/055/05

I too received an estimate for almost $1000, many years back and decided to do it myself. You basically have two options. First option is, you put the Camaro on a car lift, take the driver's side tire off. Take the Muffler off, heat shielding...etc... Remove the braces around the gas tank and lower the tank. Oh wait, did I forget to mention that it hits the axle and suspension on the way down and gets wedged in? Thanks Chevy, that makes sense... So all you have to do is pop off the rear drivers side shock, twist the neck of the tank sideways, bend the metal neck it a little and pull hard on that fuel tank to get it to come down. Disconnect 3 hose lines and 2 electrical connections and then there are 7 mini-bolts holding the actual pump in the tank. Swap pumps and reverse previous directions. This takes anywhere from 3.5 to 6.5 hours depending on your competency level.

Option 2 is to open the hatch/trunk up, lift up the carpet and pad....cut a giant hole or square (your choice) through the metal unibody about where you think the fuel pump (center of the tank) is, disconnect the hoses/electrical lines, unbolt the pump out of the tank and viola, you're half done is about 14 minutes. Swap pumps, swig a beer, and repair the massive hole you just cut through your unibody trunk metal. I recommend putting it on a hinge. Total time should be 1.5 hours and now you have an access door when your stupid fuel pump goes out again...

Difficult and expensive to do. Involves finding/purchasing a traction control (ASR)computer and installing it. ASR(Acceleration Slip Regulation) interfaces with and coordinates PCM(Powertrain Control Module) and ABS(Anti-lock Braking System). Most of the required harnesses should be present in all vehicles. Try buying a shop manual for that car and then finding a vehicle in a junk yard from which to pull the necessary components.

Well depends on how much work you want to do. The engine will fit but the mounting locations are different because 98 was the first year of the LS1 in the Camaro. There is a voltage regulator located on the internals of you alternator

replace the altenator. Voltage regulator keeps voltage constant and stops

spikes in power output, this is what is causing your headlights to blow.

You have a loose wire in your wire bundle that goes to your BAC. The problem is that the loose wire is in your RAP (retained acc. power- the gizmo that lets you listen to your radio and roll down windows after you turn off the engine.) There is a link in one of the Fbody forums, you'll have to Google it, but it will show you the wire in question. The BCM (body control module) hides behind the glove box on the right, about the size of a paperback book. Common fix your the loose wire situation is to zip tie the offending bundle to something solid to keep it from shifting. Good luck...

Disconnect battery. Then the electrical connection on the starter solenoid. Remove the starter bolts and the starter. Note the location of the spacer shims. Installation is the reverse. Don't forget the spacers shims or you will get noise when starting the vehicle.

We could write a book on the correct procedure to remove the dashboard in a Camaro. There are far too many things to do, and not do when removing it. Also, "words" are useless, in some areas, and pictures are needed to illustrate the words. Go to your local auto parts store and pick up a Haynes manual or Chilton manual. These are filled with "how to" with pictures and illustrations to guide you on how to perform these tasks. Short on cash? Most libraries have a plethora of books and the manuals I indicated in their "resource" section.

you will have to drop the fuel tank as the fuel pump is in the tank, undo the snap ring in top of tank and pry out pump and sending unit BE SURE NOT DAMAGE RING of tank,pull out and switch pumps and put back together make sure all SEALS then put snap ring back in and reassemble

when your car runs dry, the fuel pump has no load and can burn up. It has happened every time for me. It can take a few months to happen or break the first few minutes of pumping air.

This is a 1978 350 engine, 4-bolt main makes no difference.

first check to see if either your tail light or the front turn signal is out... depending on which one just go get a replacement bulb should run around 4 dollars, and change them. should fix your problem... worked for me.
