How do you replace the water pump on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?

refer to the gentelman's post about removing a water pump a little farther down on the page. the 1995-2004 models have the same basic design and there is a post on this site about removal on a '97 or '96 i think that will guide you step by step. if that isn't good enough, go to a parts store or walmart and get a Chilton's repair manual. i think they are about $12-$20 and they have instructions and diagrams on any repair or maintenance you may need to perform.

Good luck! <(^^<) (<---- Kirby) (>^^)>

The water pump is on the back side of the engine, under the exhaust manifold. This pump is driven off the timing chain. Yes, that's right, timing chain. You must remove the chain tensioner to release the pump sprocket from the chain to remove and replace the pump. Big job. Give yourself plenty of time to do this one.

How come the high beam light on the dashboard is stuck?

There is a microprocessor called the Insturment Panel Cluster Microprocessor. That controls several things, but one of the things it does is turn on the Daytime Running Light indicator and the High Beam Indicator. It could be bad. Are you sure that you have both High and Low beams? Check that first to make sure because the Turn/Hazard Headlight Switch could be bad causing you to have Hi Beams only. If you have Hi and Lo Beams, it is most likely the Microprocessor. Hope that helps.

Why might a Chevy Cavalier be running hot?

20 Reasons Why Your Engine May Run Hot

1. A lean air/fuel ratio (also check fuel pump and filter)

2. Too much timing/retarded timing/advance curve malfunction

3. Clogged radiator/collapsed radiator hose (restricted water flow)

4. Clogged engine (restricted water flow)

5. Stuck thermostat/incorrect thermostat

6. Bad water pump

7. Incorrect water pump speed (too slow, too fast)

8. Radiator too thick

9. Wrong-pressure radiator cap

10. No shroud around fan/improper fan position within shroud

11. Bad fan design

12. High-volume or high-pressure oil pump

13. Electric fan (puller or pusher) blocking air flow

14. Too much antifreeze

15. Wrong type antifreeze

16. Wrong spark plugs (i.e., wrong heat range)

17. Wrong gasoline type (try 89 or 92 octane)

18. Clogged catalytic converter

19. Clogged injector system

20. Exhaust getting into the water due to a cracked head or blown head gasket. Have your local radiator shop test your system for carbon dioxide.

It is also recommended conducting a flow test to locate a cooling system problem. Begin with a cool engine. Remove the radiator cap. Start the engine. Bring the engine up to operating temperature so that the thermostat opens. Increase engine speed to 2000 rpm. If water gushes out of the radiator, there is a flow restriction in the system. This must be corrected for proper cooling.

All those are great general universal problems, however on the 99 cavalier there is an air bleeder valve on the right hand side of the motor, there is a little steel tube coming out of a rubber hose and the valve sticks up on the steel tube. Open that bleeder valve up and a little air should come out. What happens is an air pocket blocks flow of coolant as silly as it sounds.

If that's not the problem check to make sure your fan is working. If it doesnt turn on when the car is hot, there is an ($11.00) relay that controls the fan, on the right side under that black box next to the battery. This also goes bad on the cavaliers too. Hope this helps, repost if this doesnt workout. I have a cavalier too so I can give you specific advice :)

How do you change the solenoid on a Chevy Cavalier?

Assume you mean starter solenoid; most GM starters have the solenoid built in. To change it, just replace the starter.

How do you remove the starter on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?

Note:It may be necessary to remove the exhaust pipe(s) or frame crossmember to gain access to the starter. In extreme cases it may be necessary to unbolt the mounts and raise the engine slightly to get starter out

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. If the vehicle is equipped with a delco loc 2 or theftlock audio system make sure to have the activation code before disconnecting the battery.
  • Raise the front of the car and support it securely on jackstands.Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
  • On 2.2L engines with manual transaxle remove the brace between the engine and the transaxle. On 2.3L and 2.4L OHC engines remove the air intake ducts to gain access to the top starter motor bolt locatedon the transaxle
  • Remove the mounting bolts and detach the starter.Note the location of the spacer shims they must be reinstalled in the same position (if used)
  • Working under the car clearly label then disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor and solenoid

My daytime running lights don't work?

i checked the fuses and don't know if this is the problem---should i lood for somethin else?

Where is the oil filter located on a 2002 Chevy Cavalier?

It depends on what engine you have. If it is a 4 cylinder, look at the pass side front of engine underneath. You may have to remove a shield to get to it. If it is a 6 cyl look at the pass side on the rear of the engine under the p/s pump.

If it is a 2200(or 2.2L) The oil filter is on the back of the engine block near the bottom of the block. It is tough to see, just feel around for it. I remove the filter from the top because underneath is the axel and the flex pipe for the exhuast.

It is on the passenger side of the engine block.

I remove the passenger side tire and reach in throught the side to remove the oil filter.

I remove the computer box just above the power steering pump filler and just move it out of the way. There are only 2 nuts. One on the shock tower and one on the firewall. You do not have to disconnect the wiring, it has enough slack to move it out of the way. Now you have enough room to get your arm in to reach the filter on the back of the block.

The location that is being given is correct if your 8th vin# is a "4", if it is not you have the newer style paper cartridge filter that is located on the driver side, front of the engine block mid way up.

The oil filter on a 2002 Cavalier is located in the front of the motor. There is a black plastic cap that has a 1 1/4" nut attached to it. You need to remove this plastic cap to get to the paper filter. It does not have a metal canister like most filters. It's an internal filter. To find this black cap look just to the left of the power steering fluid container and down.

What would cause loss of clutch fluid with no signs of leakage on a 1999 Chevy cavalier?

It is either leaking down the inside of your firewall under the dash (master cylinder) or leaking just enough inside the trasnmission bell housing to not puddle and be thrown around by the clutch spinning (slave cylinder).

Where is horn fuse located on 1996 Chevy cavalier?

It's a relay, not a fuse, and it should be under the dash on the driver's side.

How do you replace an ignition lock cylinder in a 1998 Chevy cavalier?

Caution:On models with a Delco Loc 2 or Theftlock audio system be sure the lockout feature is turned off before proceeding * Disable the airbag system * Remove the tilt lever if equipped * Remove the upper and lower steering column covers Ignition Switch * Remove the ignition switch retaining screws * Detach the ignition switch from the steering column housing assembly and unplug the electrical connectors Key Lock Cylinder * Turn the key to the run postion * Depress the lock button and remove the key lock cylinder

Where is the VIN in Chevy Cavalier?

Driver's side, on dash, next to windshield, inside car.

How do you program a keyless remote for a 2002 Chevy cavalier?

Inside of the trunk, driver side, pull back the carpet liner. You will see a black box velcroed to the wheel weld.It will have a wire with a plug on the end of it that goes to nothing.Ground those 2 prongs together with a aligator clip or something that will connect the two pins together. It will click when you have it connected. Then HOLD THE LOCK AND UNLOCK BUTTONS ON THE REMOTE AT THE SAME TIME UNTIL IT CLICKS AGAIN. Let off the buttons and unhook the clip. There you go. That's it. If you have more tha one remote don't unhook the clip, but hold those two buttons until it clicks and you will have 2 remotes to open the same car. If you have other cars go to www.programyourremote.com I have 1 remote that opens 3 z24's its kind of a pain because when i want in my 99 in have to close both 97's.

Is Chevy a good car?

No it's like buying cheap plastic, but the automobiles are good enough to say a good car

How do you know if the heater core is broken on a 92 cavalier?

you can tell if your heater cooling system/core is broke as the car will not produce heat when you turn on the heat inside the car. if it is not blowing heat there could there is a problem. the heater core itself should look like a small radiater, if that is clogged it could cause a problem. can also possibly fix this by doing a cooling system flush this will clear any blockages or expose the problem. if flush works, consider the thermostat. that also will cause no heat on inside.

How do you Change the front turn signal on 2002 cavalier?

Where can you find a list of dash warning lights for a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?

The list below is for the 2000-2002 Cavalier's dash. The lights on the 1995-1999 mean the same thing, but they are not in the same place.

Engine suggestions may not be the same if you have an Eco-Tech engine. The answers are from the 2.2L OHV (Internal cam) engine. It is very similar in the overhead cam engines, and the 2.4L engines.

If a light is Yellow, it means do something about it soon. If it's red, it means do sometthing about it NOW.

The right side:

Bottom left corner is Anti-Lock brake system (ABS). If it's on, it means a malfunction with the ABS system.

Immediately to the right of the ABS is seatbelt. To the right of that is Low Battery. Low Battery can also come on for alternator issues, or bad connection to your battery. First, make sure your battery has a good connection. AutoZone will test your battery and alternator for free.

Directly above the ABS light is Check Engine (CEL). If it's on, AutoZone will tell you why it's on for free. Or use an OBD II code reader and it will tell you why your check engine light is on.

Directly to the right of the Check Engine Light is Low Coolant. It is red, and looks like a square container with fluid in it, with an arrow pointing downward. Add some coolant (water and antifreeze mix) to the plastic tank on the passenger side of your engine compartment. There is a sensor in the very bottom of this tank that turns the light on. The light does not tell you the level of coolant in your engine, or in the radiator. Make sure your car is warmed up (to 195 F) to get a good reading.

To add coolant to your car, fill the plastic container to the FULL COLD line with the ENGINE COLD. DO NOT ADD COOLANT TO A CAR THAT IS HOT! You may warp the cylinder head! Let the car warm up, then cool back down, and add more if necessary.

Directly to the right of the low coolant light is the Low Traction light. Above the Low Coolant light is the Traction Control Light (says TRAC OFF). That means your traction control system is not working. Low Traction means just that, your car has low traction.

Above the TRAC OFF light is the shift up light (does not exist on automatic transmission cars).

The left side of the dash:

Top one (looks like your high-beam light, but green instead) is daytime running lights (DRL). Your DRL come on when your e-brake is not applied and your car is turned on, and your headlights are not turned on. It is a way to make sure your headlights are always "somewhat" on when you are driving. It's for safety. Some places, like Canada, require that you always drive with your lights on.

If you really hate the daytime running lights, pull your E-Brake up one click while you are driving (unless you have an automatic, then the car will ding at you every couple seconds).

Below the DRL light is the airbag. If it is on, it means your airbag is NOT working.

Below that is Service Engine. It is diffrerent from Check Engine.

BRAKE indicates an issue with your braking system, or that the parking brake is engaged. The brake light reads pressure on the porportioning valve, and can illumnate with high or low pressure (check for leaks)

To the left of BRAKE is Engine Oil Pressure. The light is activated by a sensor on the left side of the engine below the intake manifold. (Your engine sits sideways, with the front pointing towards the passenger side). Oil Pressure IS NOT oil level. There is no light or indicator on your car that you are running low on oil. You should check your oil every other day. These cars are about 10 years old! Low oil can blow your engine.

The oil pressure light looks like a "gravy boat" with a couple drops coming out the end. Or, it says OIL or OIL PRESSURE, depending on what year your Cavalier is. If your oil pressure light is on, I would not drive your car. If oil is failing to get to all parts of your engine, your engine could seize up. Check oil level. Remove your valve cover and run the car, and make sure oil is pumping up to the valves. Could be your oil pump. Your oil pump has a screen on it that can get clogged with excessive sludge. The oil pump is inside your oil pan, it's not very fun to get to.

Above oil pressure is anti theft system indicator. If you have a factory alarm, it may flash when the car is locked. Otherwise, it is an indicator of a malfunction in the anti-theft system, most typically with the Passlock ignition cylinder. If your car starts, dies, then flashes the Anti-Theft or Security light, it is your Passlock system, and you will eventually need a new key cylinder. Try leaving Key on for 15 minutes, then (without turning key back off) try to restart.)

Above the theft system indicator is Check Gauges indicator. That means, look at your gauges, there's something wrong. (Gas is extremely low, engine is too hot, RPM's are too high, etc.).

What is the average gas mileage for a 2007 Chevrolet Cavalier?

The final year for production of the Chevrolet Cavalier was 2005. The EPA estimated highway and city for the 2005 Cavalier with the 2.2L 4-cylinder and automatic transmission is 31/21 miles per gallon.
