Ignition switch removal is not too bad. The plastic cover around the steering column has 3-4 screws in it. They are on the underside facing the floor. Remove these screws and the plastic cover will snap off. That will expose the ignition switch. The switch itself has a couple of screws holding it in place. Remove those screws and unplug it from the wire harness on the back. That's it.

It's always a difficult diagnosis to know whether or not an ECM, PCM or any other type of control module is bad in a vehicle. Unless the board(s) are fried inside the module's case, there may be only sections of it that are bad. Either way, it will need to be replaced as a whole. The best way is to get to any of the sensors or actuators in the vehicle and test the reference voltage values being sent to those components. If you don't understand the fundamentals of how the computers in a vehicle work, it is doubtful you'll be able to make an accurate diagnosis. In that case, take it to a qualified shop, and tell them of your concern. Typically, a good shop will charge you one hour of labor to diagnose the issue. Maybe 1.5 hours if the problem is slightly more complicated. Expect to pay between $75 & $110 for the diagnosis.
