1998 Chevy Malibu that cranks but won't start?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you know for sure that it is not getting fuel or fire, you need to check the ECM fuse. If it is good then check the relay. If you have a professional hook up a scanner then it will tell what is wrong with it. That would be cheaoer than guessing unless you have plenty of money to waste on replacing good parts.

How do you set the time on a 2002 Chevy Malibu radio?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

First, locate the H and M buttons located just below the tuner knob (the lower of the two). You press AND hold either one of those buttons for a few seconds until it beeps, or the numbers are flashing. You can then use the H button to set the HOUR and M button to set the MINUTES. To finalize your time selection, just wait 10 seconds or so and the flashing should cease and your clock is SET! If it does not set after waiting, just press the POWER button to activate the radio and it will finalize the clock settings. You're welcome, olde tymer. Caleb

Will engine overheat if intake manifold gasket is bad?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If it blows in the right place. The exhaust is getting into the water passage which will cause the car to overheat. Probably in just a few minutes. With the engine cold, take the radiator cap off, make sure it is full. start the car. If the head gasket is blown, water will shoot out the cap for a foot or two.

How do you change and ignition switch in dashboard on 1998 Chevy Malibu?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A quick fix until you have about $300 to fix it is to turn the key to the ON position for 10 minutes, and when the theft system light stops blinking you can start it right up.

You can also just slowly turn the key to the on position (not accessory or start), shift the transmission into neutral (you have to step on the break first) and then start it. This won't work if you have tried to start it and the THEFT light is flashing, see the above answer.

the quick fix is to just wait ten minutes for the theft deterant to cut off, the problem isn't realy the ignition but the system itself and its more like 600 hundred to fix at the dealership

:

Take all the other keys off your keyring, the weight of the other keys maybe causing the ignition key to be unreadable.also it depends on what is wrong with the system. if it the anti-theft system it may be very pricy, but if it is the ignition lock cylinder than it will cost you about $100 for the new lock cylinder and several hours of labor if you are very good at working with cars.

What is the cost to repair a neutral safety switch on a 2001 Chevy Malibu LS?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

$100 for a new switch at Napa Auto Parts. Most neutral safety switches are a sealed, non reparable unit. If you are doing this yourself, I would recommend testing the wiring before replacing the unit since it is expensive. According to the Napa website, the safety switch on the 2001 Chevy Malibu does more tha simply close when in neutral, so I cannot give specifics. I recommend checking your local library to see if they have a copy of the shop manual. It will have detailed troubleshooting flowcharts to track down the exact problem.

What are the symptoms of a bad intake manifold?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The most likely evidence is an oil leak which can run on to the manifold creating smoke, depending on how bad it is. If the gaskets are bad the covers can't be tightened down suficiently to create a oil tight seal.

there should be 3 plastic lugs behind the carpet in the trunk and all you have to do is pull the carpet back and un-screw those lugs and the light should just pop out. once you have the light out there will be a clip for each bulb. find the bulb that is bad and there will be a plastic piece that you have to press and turn the whole piece then the clip will come off the taillight and the bulb will come with the clip. to remove the bulb just press the bulb down and twist it and it will come out of the harness.

Why is the timing chain noisy in 2.4 quad 4?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The guides are probably bad from the engine heat and wear.

When the tensioner has been replaced, you must take something like a small screw driver and press the little plunger, that pushes out the shoe, all the way in and then it will release the lock and apply pressure against the shoe. Most people think that the oil pressure releases it but it doesn't, the oil pressure will keep the pressure against it only after you unlock it by pressing it all the way in.
