What was Nicholas II's main reason for going to war with Japan?

His cousin, the Kaiser of Germany, helped convince Nicholas that he should go to war with Japan, and that Russia could easily defeat them. The Kaiser had other motives for goading his cousin "Nicky" into war with Japan; if Japan defeated Russia, this would eliminate Russia as a competitor in the Naval Arms Race going on in Europe in 1903. The Kaiser's main adversary was Britain, and Germany was intent on building a battleship fleet that could challenge the Royal Navy...which he would eventually accomplish during WW1. What Germany didn't need was competition from Russia...and war with Japan would solve that problem. Secondly, Russia was expanding east, just as the United States had expanded westward in the 1800's. Russia had constructed a railroad crossing the Eurasian continent; again, just as the US had done with the North American continental railroad in the 1860's. Third, Russia was urgently in need of a "ice-free" seaport, and the pacific coast line offered Port Arthur, near present day Korea; which was the scene of bitter battles during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. Nova Net Final Test Answer: To keep his people from rebelling against his government.

What was actually happening vs what was military intelligence reporting in the Vietnam war during 1961 '62 '63 and '67?

It is VERY common for the highest leadership to NOT know what's going on at the very bottom level of operations. This is true everywhere, even in civilian industry. This is why, very often, VIP's (Very Important Person) would fly into a post-battlefield to get an assessment, a US high ranking officer would go up to meet the VIP and the VIP (usually an experienced one) would by pass the officer and go to one of the common grunts to speak with him. The VIP would know, that the common GI would NOT "sugar coat" any information. In today's jargon, the GI would not be "politically correct" when he spoke with the VIP. Although the term was not generally used back then, as it is today, politically acceptable (politically correct) reports were generated from high command to the top. This is when TET happened, and everything fell apart from there. Had the US Military studied the enemy as much as they had studied the USSR's military in the 1960's they would've seen the enemy's plan & could have reacted accordingly. The facts of the enemy's plan are outlined beginning on page 10, titled, "The Enemy in Vietnam", Mounted Combat In Vietnam; Vietnam Studies, Department of Army, published in 1978; by General Donn A. Starry.

How do survivors from the vietnam war live now?

We live life to its fullest. I don't advocate for war, however I do support the troops involved in undeclared wars. I have children that are very educated and do well in their lives. I do have memories of many things in Vietnam that are not pleasant, I just remember that is the past and continue on in my life with the memories, however unpleasant they may be, reminding myself that today is a new day and the past is past. I cannot change the past, only live for the future.

Who were Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and what was their fate?

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were accused of spying for the Soviets and specifically for passing atomic secrets to the USSR during the Cold War. They were tried and convicted in 1951 for conspiracy to commit espionage, and unlike others convicted of similar crimes, they were given the death penalty. They were executed by electrocution on June 19, 1953.

The Rosenbergs were the only two US civilians executed for espionage during the Cold War (1945 to 1991).

What were Truman's goal in establishing the policy of containment?

It was basically a policy to prevent communism from spreading. For example, when communist Koreans tried to take over the government, the Nationalist Koreans fought back with the aid of US troops. This was the Korean War. When communism tried to take hold in Vietnam, Vietnamese nationalists fought back with the aid of US troops. This was the Vietnam War. So basically it was a policy that pretty much sent military aid to any country fighting off communism in an attempt to stop it from taking over any more countries.

Explain the reasoning behind massive retaliation and brinkmanship?

The threat of massive retaliation deters attack.

Brinksmanship was the attempt to obtain as much political advantage as possible without going too far and starting a nuclear war that would kill everybody. The term refers to the strategy of going to the brink of war without quite starting a war. This was thought to be necessary because the US and the USSR were involved in a desperate struggle for global domination, and used every means at their disposal short of nuclear war. If either nation was too timid, or too frightened of war, they would wind up giving in to their opponent and losing the struggle. It was a crazy situation.
