Public location that provides connections for mobile computers or devices?

It varies from country to country, but places like Panera's and Starbucks or even a few McDonalds do this now, no signup required. Some municipalities also are doing this, but some require residency. What you need is a WiFi equipped piece of hardware. Bear in mind that places that provide WiFi are expecting you to do light web surfing and e-mail, not running DropBox, BitTorrent or playing games like WoW, all of which eat bandwidth.

Why is the principle of locality crucial to the use of virtual memory?

Because of two things:

ü Program and data references within a process tend to cluster à only a few pieces of a process will be needed over a short period of time.

ü It is possible to make intelligent guesses about which pieces will be needed in the future, which avoids thrashing.

Why does a laptop freeze when connecting an external USB or Firewire drive?

There are two reasons: 1. A slow laptop that struggles with reading external plug-and-play drives. 2. Trying to plug in external drive without turning off laptop.

This does happen on desktops as well. Before ruling out a defective hard drive, you can try the following. Go to device manager and delete all USB entries under USB, reboot and let Windows redetect and configure. Also, if you have tons of USB connected devices remove them all, and try the USB drive to see if it accepts it without a problem.

A quick way to verify if the external drive is working is to connect it to another computer. If its working sweet, you know it's functioning and the problem resides on your laptop.

Might want to double check bios to make sure USB 2.0 is enabled, to give more power to the ports.

If all else fails, make sure windows is up to date, go to windowsupdate.com, you have latest drivers for chipset/motherboard/etc. You can also try a repair install, google for information on DIY repair install. -NaturaTek

If you have more than one drive try changing the order on the data cable.

Make sure the jumpers are set properly.

Will another drive read the disk you are using?

I hope these ideas will help.

Check your ide drivers in your device manager. If you have the Nvidea ide drivers, roll them back to the original windows drivers.

Your computer wont recognize your DVD burner or your CD player?

Check the jumpers, make sure they aren't both jumpered the same if they're both on the same ribbon cable.

Is it bad for a computer fan to be running all the time?

You can't really say that it's bad, but on the other hand (depending on a fan quality, age, etc...) the fan can sometimes magically break so processor doesn't get cooled as it's supposed to and it overheats, so the computer crashes, or simply shows you a msg saying that temperature is too high..., bla bla bla and it will turn off in several secs, so you have to buy new fan (don't fix it, because it may happen again, but much more seriously.).

Some people don't turn off their computers for days, but I think that you should always turn it off for the night.

I know from my own experience about the fan thing. The fan leg somehow slipped(???) and hit its bay and fell down(as it stands vertical) and it would hit the graphics card if it didn't hang on the wires that were holding it, so I had to change the original Intel fan, but the only thing that fits on an original Intel processor is an expensive original Intel fan, and on an original Intel motherboard will only go an original Intel processor. That happened the second week after I bought my precious computer. You just can't comment about that. I wasn't crazy enough to buy everything original from Intel again, so I bought the first quality stuff I found and it's lasted for almost 2 years, now, up to today.

AnswerFor most computers, the fan is designed to be on all the time. The fan is on for normal usage, but when the CPU heats up the fan speeds up to compensate. However, if you fan is sounds like it is at maximum speed, then this is a problem.

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (on a Windows computer) and check the "CPU Usage" at the bottom. When you are not using your computer for anything strenuous, ie it is just sitting, idling on your desktop, the usage should be between 0% and 10%. If it is consistantly high and idles at 60, 70+ % then there is a 'hungry' program using up too much of your resources. Select the Processes tab and look for the Process with a very high entry under CPU (nb "System Idle Process" does not count). Use Google to find out which program it belongs to and consider reinstalling the program to fix it. The other alternative is that is malware, in which case you should run a virus/spyware checker. Two decent free ones are AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/)/Microsoft Defender (www.Microsoft.com).

Why does increasing memory do more to improve system performance than simply increasing the speed of single processor?

Well, it doesn't... always.

If you don't have enough system memory (Ram) your computer is forced to waste time swapping data to and from the HDD to load it into and out of ram as needed. This is really really really bad. HDDs, even SSDs are quite slow by computer standards. If you're in this situation and you add enough ram to stop it you will see a very dramatic performance increase.

That being said, if you already have enough ram for your uses, you won't notice much of a difference if you add more. In this case a CPU upgrade or speed increase (overclocking) would be more noticeable. It is important to note that in most situations, a CPU overclock will yield significantly better performance improvements than a ram overclock. and sometimes its could just be the computer. if none of this works try getting a NEW computer
