How do you make lockpicking tools?

Simple pidks for mortice locks can be made by just bending lengths of wire coathanger. More complex tools for mortice locks such as overlifters require more precision engineering. Simple pick tools for rim-type locks are usually made out of 1.5mm - 2mm sprung steel sheet, so can be made with an amount of metal and some files. (common useful shapes include ball end and double ball end (for wafer locks), half diamond and hook (for rim, and euro- and oval- barrel) and a rake. You'll also need a tensioner.

It is possible to make the second kind out of hairpins, paperclips, etc, but as a beginner, you'll have a more difficult job using them than you would have using something better made.

How long can you store cement without using it?

Portland cement can be stored indefinitely provided it is not exposed to moisture. Most cement bags have a thin plastic lining to protect it from humidity, not rain, and is only meant to be temporary. Therefore, you should plan to use the cement product from an unopened, weather protected bag in weeks, not months. When the bag is overexposed it will result in "dead" cement, because it has already begun the chemical reaction with water, and reveals itself by hardening and clumping. Throw that bag away, it's dead.

Graphite is sometimes used as a lubricant and diamond can be used on the tips of cutting tools. In terms of the crystal structure why might this be?

The graphite is made up of layers and with a solvent absorbed in between these layers they can slip over each other, thus creating the lubricant effect. The diamond is amongst one of the hardest materials we know because the carbon is bound very well to each other. Thus it can cut other things and be a drill. Both are carbon, but the structure makes a difference.

What is the best lubricant for drilling in cast iron?

I would use any auto engine type oil. Also rest the bit for 1 second every 5 seconds by letting up on the pressure. this helps to break heat build up on the tip. I would not use water, wd 4o,3in1 or that kind of light stuff. You might have to heat the cast iron first since it can be brittle and can easily crack/break if too much pressure is put on a small area.A small propane torch would probably be enough heat-you're not smelting it, just heating it!I would use thread cutting oil and a SHARP bit.

What is the name of the saw used to cut out MDF?

Well, MDF is basically cheap wood, made from glue and misc wood shavings. Such as the stuff you get when you cut a piece of ply wood and find lying around all over the floor. It is normally fairly strong, but is has a tendency to start chipping pieces out after a while. It can be cut will normally any standard wood saw, but manufactures use Sawmills to cut them ergo that is where most of the sawdust its made with comes from. Hope this helps.i roxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx nooooooooob

I have just starting working with MDF

Straight cuts: table saw, circular saw, jig saw, pretty standard just remember to use a higher teeth count on the blades

Inside cutouts: jig and router

When working with MDF make sure you use respiratory and eye protection as the dust contains formaldehyde.

Where can you get plans to build a hammer mill for milling grain?

I have the same question. I've been looking for a small hammer mill for making mesquite bean flour. The only hammer mill that I've found for home/small farm use is the Novital, made in Italy, sold in Australia for $570 delivered. On the internet you can find Amy Smith's screenless hammer mill but I have yet to see a plan clear enough to make one myself; emails to Smith have not been responded to. I think her plan was a thesis at MIT so it might be possible through interlibrary loan to get the thesis. Also, on Ebay there is an offering of 25 patents for various kinds of mills--I've just sent for the package so can't say where it includes a plan for a small hammer mill.

If you run across any good plans, let me know. Good luck. Evan Blythin blythin@hotmail.com
