If it's an average sized rocket, you can make a parachute from a plastic grocery bag. Place a dinner plate upside down and cut or trace a line around it. Cut this circle and attach 4 or 6 x 24 inch pieces of thread to it with scotch tape. Now just tie the loose ends in a knot and attach it to the elastic that goes from rocket body to nose cap. Now your rocket will float down after it's journey into the sky.

  Cut a circle of lightweight cardboard to serve as your roof. Cut inward to the center of the circle from one edge, and shape the cardboard into a sloped cone. This will serve as your roof. It should overhang the walls by a wide margin; the roofs of medieval huts were substantial.

  Glue the cone's edges, then paint the surface of the cone with craft glue.

  Lay straw or dried grass onto the roof, radiating out from the peak to the edges. Allow the first layer of thatch to dry, paint on another layer of glue, and add more thatch. Keep going until the cardboard is hidden completely and the roof is fairly thick.

  Glue a strip of rough cloth to the top of the doorway. This serves as a simple curtain door. Color the cloth with your paint or shoe polish for a rough look.

  Embellish your model with a small wooden outhouse, made the same way as the hut; a chicken coop made of twigs; or whatever other clever ideas strike you.

I would not recommend using food coloring. I just tried to do a project in my son's Kindergarten class making hand molds with Plaster of Paris and it has turned out to be a complete disaster. The molds are not drying; even the ones that were done four days ago are still damp and bleeding dye. The only mold that has dried completely is the one that you can tell has the least amount of dye in it. You might want to try powdered tempra paint and see if that will work but you might have the same problem. Also, one of the colors I used was green; as those molds dried, they have turned yellow.
