I am having a similar problem! I have a 2000 stratus and had the water pump replaced and it idles low. In the mornings (when it is cold) it buckles like it wants to die out, and doesn't change gears smoothly... kind of drags. Just yesterday morning it did the samething, but this time it felt like it was going to just burn out (think of driving a stick shift for the first time) and the check engine light went on. It did this three times that morning, and the check engine light went away as soon as the car stablized. I brought it to AAMCO and they can not find anything wrong with it. I brought it to a different mechanic and they can not find anything wrong either! It's driving me nuts. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 99 DODGE STRATUS, THE TIMING IS STILL OFF A LITTLE BIT. I TOOK IT TWO TECH. AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT WHEN I WANT TOOK IT TO THE DEALSHIPS THEY SAID IT TIMIMG WAS STILL OFF!!!!

Check inside the front fender wells behind the tires.

remove door panel then remove screws behind mirror.

You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

- I actually just replaced mine last year on a 2.4l. If you aren't mechanically inclined you will want to take it to a garage. It is realatively hard. First you have to put the car up on ramps and slid back to the firewall. You have to remove the 3 10mm bolts on the heat sheild. you can then remove the lower bolts to the down pipe. the upper bolts you have to use a combination of under the car and under the hood. i had to remove part of my intake to get to the bolts. if you thought that was hard its even harder to remove the actual manifold. you have to have it sidewaysand twist it around alot to get it out. it took me the better half of two days to change it out but it was better than paying $600 dollars to get it done.

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE YOU HAVE IF THEY ARE BENT THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED IF IT IS JUST THE THREADS YOU MAYBE ABLE TO CUT NEW ONES BUT THAT IS MORE TROUBLE THAN ITS WORTH WHAT EVER YOU DO AFTERWARDS AN ALIGNMENT BY A PRO WILL BE NECESSARY AND ASK FOR A PRINT OUT OF IT BY THE WAY IF THE TIE ROD END IS WARNOUT ITS JUST WARNOUT AND NEEDS REPLACED

The lights are controlled by the Body Control Module (in the fuse box), from a signal on your dimmer switch, also called the multifunction switch. Do not swap out the BCM with a junkyard one, as it must be programed for your car (i am going through this now with my 96 Dodge Stratus)

I have an 04 Stratus, and have the same problem. Take it to an auto parts store that does code reading (or buy one), and read the codes. I've had 7 errors come up on one, and they all effect how long the car runs.

First, Cam sensor (looking at the engine, its on the left side, underneath the 1 1/2 inch rubber tube. Second, Crank sensor (real pain in the butt to change) Right side of engine--remove air intake. Sensor fits the same plug as the cam, but they are NOT the same--found that out the hard way. 3rd Low battery. Replace it if it needs it. Remove drivers tire--looking at the rotor its on the left side. remove panel, remove battery. and replace if needed. 4th MAP sensor, have not gotten around to replace this yet. 5th (6th and 7th) Barometric Pressure Sensor. No idea the car even had one. Dont know its location either. I've had all those errors, and replaced all but the MAP and BPS, and it still stalls mid-drive. Problem still isn't resolved. Oh, forgot about the random mis-fire on cyl. 5 --have had this problem for a LONG time now..I'd say about 30k+ miles, so I'm pretty sure it doesnt have too much to do with stalling.

Because the interlock mechanism is broke. Take the cover off the bottom of thesteering column. There on the bottom of the column you will see a cable running up from the dash. The other end of the cable is connected to the shifter. The ignition switch triggers a pin downward that moves the cable allowing the shifter to move.

The problem is the pin gets worn or is cheap and can not take the wear and tear. The solution is to remove the end of the cable from the connector on the steering column. I duc taped mine in-place just back of the connector due to the pain it is to remove it completely. Be warned that this "fix" deactivates the interlocking between the ignition switch, steering wheel and shifter. The shifter will move without having the key in, but, it will move. You can also take you keys out when you shut off the car. This is a nice feature too. Cuts down on the stolen vehicle thing.

This problem starts small then get worse. At first the keys get hung up from time to time. Then it gets hard to mover the shifter out of park. When it is out of park sometimes you can't get it back in park. When you do get it back in park then the keys can be impossible to remove. I almost missed an Oral Surgeon appointment because of this key problem. I got lucky and had the worst of both.

You also now can lock you keys in the car!! Depending on the situation the chime may not fire or the locks will active at times. It was nice that it was impossible to lock the car with the keys in the ignition. Now you can.

you should find the egr in the front of the motor under the throlltle , two screws hold it in place , small hands and a univeral and off it comes . to find what yours looks like you can search eBay and see a pix or in your browser type in egr and engine size . it was harder to get to egr then anything no need to remove housing , if on AOL email me and i can offer a mechanic offering free repair advice and he helped us. be sure to clean port behind egr with ice pick and vaccumm it will or maybe blocked with black carbon build up . we used a wrech and it had a twisting ten mm ? on it and used an extention on it to gain access to it. we did remove air intake and one hose for ease

You put brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir on a 1998 Dodge Stratus. This is located on the master cylinder, under the hood, on the driver's side.

There are two hex/star screws above the headlight casing that need to be removed first. Then you slide out the headlight casing to expose the backside, there you will find the a medium sized slipnut around the Halogen bulb. Turn counter clock wise to release and pull back gently allowing the halogen bulb to come free of the headlight casing. Unplug the Halogen bulb (a flatheaded screw driver my be needed to pry the locking clasp) To install the new Halogen bulb reverse the above steps be very careful to NOT touch the Halogen Bulb itself. The oils on your skin can cause the bulb to blow out sooner when power is given to the bulb. Tighten everything back up and you are done...

In the a/c-heating box, very complicated job and you will need to pull the dash......................

I just did my water pump last year on my 98' stratus. Power stearing pump off first. Then front and passenger motor mounts, with a jack under the oil pan. lower the jack on the oil pan far enough to get the cranckshaft pully off and take the crankshaft pully off. Remove both belt covers and belts. Once all that is done you can take out the 7 bolts holding the pump on (they are hard to get to). Revese the order to install.
