Which breed-of-dog has the biggest-litters?

The largest litter ever recorded (so far) was born to a Neapolitan Mastiff and there were 24 pups born in total (although 3 died shortly). The record for the largest litter when all the pups survived stands with 3 different dogs at 23 pups. Those dogs were an American Foxhound, a St. Bernard, and a Great Dane. I am not sure which dogs have the largest litters on average, I'm pretty sure it just varies from dog to dog.

Do dogs have umbilical cords?

Yes. Each puppy will have his own umbilical cord and his own placenta. When the pup is born the mother dog will use her teeth to severe the umbilical cord. She will usually then eat the placenta. It is important when a mother dog is giving birth to make sure that all of the placentas come out. If a placenta is left inside the mother dog it can make her sick or even kill her.

Can a puppy get parvo after its second vaccination?

Yes, it is possible. The vaccine against parvovirus is not considered completely effective in a puppy until two weeks after the last shot is given; since the last shot is generally given when the puppy is 16 weeks old, the puppy can usually be considered protected by the time it is 18 weeks old. If your puppy had not completed the vaccine series, it was still susceptible to parvovirus infection.

How many puppies can a dog have in its lifetime?

It depends on the size of the litters they have. A female can be bred twice a year, or about every six months. Many breeds have litters of around six puppies but there are times where they will have a litter with as many as 12 or 15 puppies which could mean as many as 30 puppies in one year!

Depending on the breed and health of the dog it varies, but the average is 9.

Can a dog breed if it was already spayed?

No! In fact, the sooner you get her spayed, the better. The ideal is to prevent pregnancy, and she might not be pregnant yet. Even if she is, she can be spayed at any time but the earlier the better. Spaying a female dog that has become pregnant is usually more expensive. The quicker you have it done, the less harmful to the dog and your pocket book. I would also make sure that what ever dog mated with her is neutered! We have enough unwanted animals in this country. Please don't stall and allow her to become pregnant or advance in pregnancy and have puppies. If you think she's pregnant and have a problem ending the pregnancy on "moral" grounds, consider the morality of what will happen if she has puppies. It will be difficult to find sincerely good homes for all of them. To do a reasonable job, you should screen each person who wants a puppy, asking how long the dog will be alone each day, whether it will live inside or outside, calling their veterinarian for reference, and checking their home first. Not everyone is the caring pet owner they may seem when they are cuddling a puppy. Often, when people take puppies (especially free ones), they grow tired of them within a year. Partly it's because they're no longer "cute" and "puppy-like" once they are beyond about 12 weeks old, and partly because they've had time to develop behavioral issues if they're not adequately trained. The shelters are full of unwanted dogs that are 1 to 2 years old. If, by some miracle, you are able to find people who will keep each of the pups for life, consider that those homes could have rescued the same number of pups from your local shelter or rescue. Either way, puppies will suffer, and that is not moral.

How many puppies does a Shih Tzu have?

Hi there! Well my shihtzu just had her puppies 3 weeks ago and this is her first litter. She is on the small, small side and she had 5 puppies! but it depends.

I would find out about your shihtzus "Mother" if her mother had a big litter ex.(7pups) chances are she won't have only 1 or 2 but more.

This is how I estimated how many my dog was going to have but if she was bigger she probably would've gave birth to 6-7 pups.

It's a great experience but I wouldn't do it if you aren't completely ready money wise and mind wise.

Good luck

How do you stop a puppy from killing chickens?

The pup needs to understand that the birds/flock are yours. You are the puppies Alpha and the birds are your property. Not unlike training a pup not to chew shoes, careful watch must be taken for the first few weeks of training and sharp commands of "NO" when the pup chases the birds. Take the pup around chickens as often as possible and make it feel the flock is part of the pack. Mistakes will be made but if you are watchful and you use a leash for the first few days most dogs will come to accept the birds without seeing them as prey.
