The challenges in Firefighting are legion, and depend entirely on the emergency you're dealing with. A vehicle accident poses different challenges than a house fire. If I were to speak generally, I'd say the following challenges apply to almost any emergency:

1. Establishing effective command and control of the scene.

2. Maintaining a safe work environment for all involved.

3. Communicating effectively between teams and scene commander(s).

4. Effectively evaluating, requesting, and delegating tasks to resources.

That's from more of an officer's perspective. When I was inside a burning structure, my priorities changed slightly. Maintaining communication and a link with my teammate(s), monitoring the immediate environment, evaluating whether the tactics we were using were working effectively, and double checking my own safety (keeping heart rate in check, keeping my personal gear working, checking my SCBA levels, and knowing when I needed to step out and take a break) were important.

Not necesarily, firefighting is not a reserved occupation although more primitive attitudes to inclusivity, and badly informed risk assessments of firefighting tasks can make insurers uneasy. But it depends where in the world you live so you must ask the question locally.

A dry hydrant is backflushed after a suction hose connection is made to a fire department pumper. The backflushing occurs when the pump operator opens the water tank valve. This will allow tank water from the pumper to flow through the suction hose into the dry hydrant piping and strainer. This process allows dirt and debris from the water source that has collected in the dry hydrant strainer and pipe to be removed.

Many military experts believed that the rifle musket would have a major effect on the US Civil War. So where did the Maltese cross come from, and how did it get to be known as a symbol of the fire service? The Maltese cross is named after the island of Malta, which came to be the home of the Knights of St. John. The Knights of St. John existed during the 11th and 12 centuries. The armor worn by the Knights covered their entire bodies as well as their faces. Because of this it was often difficult for the knights to recognize one another during battle. They realized they would need some type of symbol that could be used to quickly and easily identify them selves. They chose the Cross of Calvary, which would later be known as the Maltese cross. During the Crusades, the enemies of the nights commonly used fire as a weapon. It was quite common for a Knight to have to risk his own life to save another Knight or extinguish a fire. The Knights of St. John were also known for their care of the sick and injured. Combined with their abilities to fight fires, and the pride and honor they took in their work, the Maltese cross seems a fitting symbol of the modern fire service. Firefighting is a proud profession, and only a symbol of pride would exemplify the work of a firefighter.
