How do you fix a VSS sensor problem on a Geo Tracker?

Hi, First, do you have a 3 speed auto or a 4 speed? If this is concerning a 3 speed auto I had this very same problem. The VSS is an iuntegral part of the speedometer on the 3 speed. The problem is in one of three places, the speedometer (not repairable, only replaceable) the speedo cable (could be not fully connected on the speedo) or the car's computer. The speed is replaceable as the whole assy, I found it a few places, the speedo cable is the easiest to check, disconnect from the transmission so you have some cable to work with then remove the instrument panel assy and check that the cable is fully connected and not broken so that the cable is not staying connected, if it's broken, then get a new cable from a Chevy dealer and it's easy to replace just start at the instrument panel first or it's an impossible task. The instrument panel assy is eaqually easy to replace, just remove the speedo cable from the tranny first so you can have extra cable inside. If it's the computer then it's also easy to replace but so far I've only found that it was the cable and the speedo. If it's a 4 speed auto then the VSS is mounted on the rear of the tranny and is not to bad to replace. Good luck. Steve H.

Where is the starter located on a 1994 Geo Tracker?

Hi, The starter should be located on the right side of the engine, tucked in real close to the engine. If you will look down from the battery side, you should see the starter about in a line with the front side of the battery. If the starter is not working or sometimes not working, try hitting the starter while someone turns the key to the start position...really, this works. Until you can replace the starter, this is a way to keep going. It does mean you need to replace the unit but it's only two bolts and a few wires and looks like an easy job, you need jackstands or ramps or someone tha'll let you use their garage lift. I have to do this so I've been going through the same thing. Hope this helps and good luck. Steve H.

How do you fix a leak in the washer fluid for a 96 geo tracker?

Hi, The first would be buy new, crazy, too expensive! Second is can you find one at a local salvage / junkyard, that's what I did. Third is to empty the washer tank and make a repair with epoxy. If the hole is too big, then try to fit a piece of hard plastic or some type of lexan, the kind they use for windows, over the hole and epoxy the hole closed wth the plastic piece. I'll bet though that your tank is cracked and an epoxy repair should cover and fix the crack. In the meantime, after you patch the tank, you'll do yourself a favor by finding a used tank. I was able to find one right away when I needed one. Good luck. Steve H.

96 Geo Tracker: How do you fix a speedometer and odometer that stopped working?

It could be a broken or disconnected speedo cable, that's one thing, the other is that the speedo itself has died that's what happened to me. The thing to do is first check the cable. You need to disconnect it from both ends and see that the inside works, the hard part is removing the instrument panel assy. This whole deal takes a bit of time and sure helps if you've got help but it's doable. If the cable's ok then you need to buy a new instrument assy.

What is the spark plug gap for a 1992 Geo Tracker LSI?

NGK recommends a gap of .032

Denso recommends .042

Bosch recommends .040

totally BS. Bolognese sauce

0.028 to 0.031 inch. SPEC !!! read the FSM.
i can email you the FSM and the TSB on the newest factory recommendation on plugs.
but the TSB leaves the gap orig. spec. 1992. (up to 98)

suzuki made the car, geo is clone. so same.

the Spark plug mfg. says that number is NOT the OEM spec, that is what their silly sparkplug making machine set them to , in the factory .
see. what it is ,not a recommendation as to what i should be.

i email all 3 and that is what they said. as i suspected (knew for sure too)

the gap is based on the energy of your igniter (coil and ignitor) in later years they went to .040 inches, with coil on plug. but that has nothing what to do with a 92.

Disinformation is wild on this topic. email the maker and ask this silly question.
what does the words on the box mean.

not a thing.

and keep in mind this plug fits 1000 diff. cars and such.
so tell me , how in the world can they all be 0.040 or 0.044 as some say.
?

rip

this might clear of that snort]n bull the jive....

99 olds alero key won't turn in ignition stuck in park what could be the problem?

Try turning the sterring wheel just a little while trying to turn the key. Also you might try pulling up on the gear shift lever if this is a column shifter while trying to turn the key. Hope this works.

How do you remove an interior window handle on a 1990 geo tracker?

There is a small " U- shaped " clip behind the crank. You can buy a window crank removal tool or use a small right angled pick. Another way is to take a thin rag and slide it behind the window cranks and pull up on it. Make sure you are going against the open end of the clip and pray it doesn't fly across the room. hahahahah Good luck!

How do you turn the four wheel drive off on a Geo Tracker?

I have a 1995 Geo Tracker and there is a handle just to the right of the gear shift (I have 5 forward) that's clearly marked "2" and "4". I'm fairly certain that yours isn't that simple. Sooooo -- go to GM dot com and join the community (you need your vin number). They will permit you to download an owner's manual in pdf, and I'm certain you will find it there. In addition ebooks on line offers free copies of owner's manuals for later years.

What is the timing belt change interval for a 1996 Geo Tracker with the 1.6L 16v SOHC engine?

Answer

What does your owner's manual say? If you don't have one, then either get one and follow that schedule or, call a dealer and find out the correct change interval. If this is an interference engine, then serious engine damage will occur if it breaks the belt. Don't guess, find out for sure. If you cannot get a definitive answer, then replace it at 60,000 just to be safe.

Answer

The Haynes manual, and two online sources I've looked up say up to '96 change at 60K and '96 and newer 100K. To add to my confusion one source states it's an interference motor another that it isn't.

Can you tow a Geo Tracker 5 speed?

How much transmission fluid goes in the 1992 Geo Tracker?

Hi, You didn't specify whether you want for an auto or a manual so I'll give you both The Auto Trans takes 3.2 pints and the manual takes 5.8 pints. Those are the only fluid specs I have so I have to think it's with the pan dropped and the filter replaced not a complete flush as in an overhaul, but you probably are asking about what I mentioned, a fluid and filter change. follow up if need be and good luck. Steve H.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1996 Geo Tracker?

I'm in the middle of this job on a 1995. Found out the hard way (didn't read the service manual close enough) that you must remove the timing belt to do this job. So much for what I thought was going to be an easy task.
