Was the gulf war a 'total war'?

Answer

Total war would have involved nuclear weapons. Total means total.

Answer

An example of total war would be a scenario such as existed in recent times.

Tony Blair and George bush decided to attack Saddam Hussain to change the regime and also to discover any future weapons/ plans he might have about trying to drag Israel into war with all Arab States.

It started when Saddam tried to get a British company to make the barrels of a super gun aimed at Israel designed to drag all Arab states into war with the Jews who they believe accupy Arab land wrongly.

The tubes were said to be for food processing but on inspection were found to be far too highly developed for that purpose.

The Mussad ( The Israeli secret service ) discovered that the super guns designer had been desparate to sell his idea to the west but that failed and he had made a deal with Saddam,he was killed off and Her Majesties Customs had

intercepted the tubes being driven on the motorway on route to Iraq.

Saddam was given many warnings about his developing arsenal but made excuses about their purpose saying that the rockets were for defence and did not have the fuel to reach Israel, it was discovered that a simple stage in the rockets production

meant that a larger fuel cell could easily be fitted in order to reach jewish settlements.

Finaly he was given a last warning,Resolution 1441 but the French and German members had no stomach for any conflict and when Saddam breached the rules once more only the more dedicated members went to war.

Now let us take a different veiw! Saddam is still in power!,he fires a weapon into Israel and Israel retaliates, other Arab states join Iraq to fight the Jews,

Israel is a nuclear power and has little choice in the end but to use nuclear weapons, radio active oil does not travel well at all so we all starve to death or fight to gain more oil producing land worldwide, world war meaning total and utter destruction of life as we know it.

What human rights did Saddam Hussein take away?

There are too many to name, but here are a few: Documented human rights violations 1979-2003 * Approved executions, acts of torture and rape. * Public beheadings of women who were accuse of prostitution and took place in front of family members including children. The heads of the women were publicly displayed near signs reading 'For the honor of Iraq.' 130 women were reportedly killed in this manner, but the estimation is probably higher. * Children (reported as young as 5) were subjected to military training which included cruelty to animals. If the parents objected they were executed and the children imprisoned. * The Iraq citizens were restricted from voting and 8% of members of Arab Ba' ath Party could vote leaving the citizens unable to vote in another government. * The Iraq citizens were not allowed to assemble unless it was to express support for their government. The Iraqi government controlled the establishment of political parties regulated by internal affairs which monitored their activities. * Check points prevented citizens from traveling abroad without government permission (expensive). They had to post collateral and Iraqi women could not travel without a male companion. * Halabja poison gas attack occurred March 15 - 19, 1988 and Hussein began his extermination against the Kurdish people living in Northern Iraq. There were at least 50,000 - 100,000 people killed, many were women and children. * Experimentation's of different gases on civilians. * Mass executions on the Kurdish and disappearances of thousands of civilians. * Experimentation of chemical weapons including mustard gas, Sarin, nerve agents that killed thousands. * Imprisonment of thousands of women, children and the elderly under extreme deprivation. * Citizens were forced from their villages, homes and land along with schools, mosques, farms and power stations. * Hussein massacred Kurdish north and the Shiasouth and the deaths were estimated from a range of 2,000 - 100,000 Kurds and 60,000 to 130,00 for shi ites. * Death penalties were handed down for theft, corruption, currency speculation and military desertion. The more fortunate had amputations or branding. * CNN revealed eventually that Iraq torturing journalists and Iraqi citizens in 1990s. * In the 2003 invasion of Iraq mass graves were found with several thousand bodies and more are being uncovered to this day.; It was believed that most of the dead died in the 1991 uprising against Saddam Hussein. * In the 2003 invasion of Iraq many torture center were found in security office and police stations such as hooks for hanging people by their hands for beatings, electric shock, etc. * In some reports torture was used to improve the performance of the Iraqi soccer team, but there are no correct records on this.

What happens if us never caught Saddam Hussein?

If the U.S. had never caught Saddam Hussein, it is likely that he would have continued to exert influence in the region, potentially leading to ongoing instability in Iraq and the broader Middle East. His absence from capture might have fueled persistent insurgency against U.S. forces, complicating post-war reconstruction efforts. Additionally, his survival could have revived his regime's loyalists, possibly resulting in a more fragmented Iraq and prolonged conflict. Ultimately, the dynamics of U.S. foreign policy and regional relationships could have shifted significantly.

Post War effects of troops returning from Desert Storm?

Keep in mind, the whole campaign lasted less than two months, that's a little bit longer than a National Guard extended training exercise held at Fort Irwin (NTC) California during the cold war days. So post war effects were at a minimum; as an added incentive, the Iraqi's did more surrendering than they did fighting, so that should've lessened any US "battle fatigue cases" even more.

US troops may have experienced "some" DU (Depleted Uranium) exposure, as this was a new filler for service rounds expended during the campaign. Otherwise, the returning US Troops were greeted with a NATION wide parade upon their return home to the USA!

Did anyone with marine wing support squadron 273 in al khanjar get gulf war syndrome?

from LZ83!

I was a medic with the Air Force Aeromedical Evacuation & Mobile Aeromedical Staging Facility (MASF) that was with the SeaBees approximately 3 clicks to the east. We were next to the heavy art/arms storage area.

I've been struggling with "Desert Storm disease" for over 18 years now - much to the chagrin of the VA who doesn't believe us.

* * * BUT * * *

Today (18 Sep 09), I had an appointment for the usual "so what's the matter with you" debacle and, by accident, I was seen by a doctor who not only BELIEVES Gulf War Syndrome, but does his best to treat it and give us some relief! I've never felt hope like this since returning stateside in 1991.

There are new studies out that are really pointing toward exposure to the nerve agent Sarin. From the Army Times May 26, 1007 - http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003723056_gulfwar26.html:

The debate over the issue goes back 16 years to when U.S. forces blew up the chemical-munitions dump in Khamisiyah, releasing a plume of sarin gas to which thousands of U.S. troops were exposed, something the Pentagon denied until 1997.

Al Khanjar was under this plume for 2 days: 10 Mar 91 and 11 Mar 91.

What might be some long term ramifications of the war in Iraq for us managers and companies operating internationally?

The ramifications of any "profit making enterprise" is having the region of operations become so dangerous or unstable that not only are profits endangered, but leaving the area with THOSE profits in hand become impossible. Another words, for a capitalistic venture; if a company makes money, then cuts and runs before unstability returns, then they have done well.

If they make capital, but don't get out while the "gettings good", then they lose what they made. True with anything, anywhere...timing. Other than with that region, an economy might collapse while working elsewhere...there goes the profit margin. Timing!
