Yeppp, but it's not "colonies" it is, "colonially". Colonies (colony) is a NOUN. Colonise is the verb and colonial is the adjective.

While the European colonization of Africa was driven by economic, political and social motivations, the main driving force was economic based. Europeans had a large demand for raw materials, and stable markets and they saw Africa as the place to provide for their economic needs.

Many African nations face land that was stripped of natural resources without any care or concern for the environment. In many cases, the colonial powers were only interested in extracting the maximum amount of resources, and gave little concern to the condition they were leaving the land in. As a result, oil drilling and strip mining have rendered much of the land in some countries ruined for farming. In some cases, even after imperialists had abandoned the colonies, many African nations' natural resources are still owned by businesses from the former imperialist states.

It took place in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Great Britain and France were very big players in this. Africa was a prime target.

Many people cite the ending of World War II as the leading circumstances of the new American imperialism. The end of this war, left the United States, fully intact and it did not have its homeland destroyed as many other nations did. Thus the USA had a distinct advantage with its economy in comparison to the other participants of the war.

So, by default, the USA had become the major power in the world. This was enhanced by Western Europe's fear of Soviet expansion into Eastern Europe.

Because of this, many countries were happy to have USA military bases in many nations world wide. This increased the USA's sphere of influence worldwide.

In addition to the above, the new American imperialism has displayed itself in other ways:

A. The USA's defense industries are the largest arms supplier in the world. This places many of the USA's friends & allies in a position of depending upon US made warplanes and other types of weapons; and

B. On a cultural basis, the numerous worldwide US military bases, along with the world's seemingly insatiable desire for Hollywood films has had a cultural impact on many nations. From the birth of rock n' roll to bluejeans, America's cultural imperialism has affected the world. As an aside, Hollywood makes more money in its overseas films than it does domestically.

Many groups objected to the including some religious groups. Christian Pacifists opposed World War I because their ideology considers all wars as evil. They believe Jesus himself was a pacifist and urged his followers to do so as well.

The US was never completely isolated from the rest of the world. Trade made the US an active member of world affairs. It was during the period of the 1890s that the US foreign policy became influenced by imperialism. During that decade, the US became the most important industrial power in the world. That meant we had to find markets and areas to obtain raw materials. Business was also looking at other areas in the world as potential customers for our products. The US military, especially the Navy, was growing and expanding in other areas of the world where we had not had the ability to go in force before. The war with Spain and the presidency of T. Roosevelt also made the US a major economic, military, and imperialistic power.

Because the Nile River gave them a water source. Also the desert provided protection because their enemies couldn't survive the journey through the desert without water and the Nile was the only water source by Egypt.
