How are the leaders selected in Iraq?

On a national level, Iraq has been a parliamentary democracy since the 2006 Constitution came into force. This means that leaders are elected through popular election and the most powerful party or parties will select one of their members for the Prime Ministry. However, in many local cases, Iraqi leaders come to power through hereditary or tribal connections or come to power by their military history or similar connections. It is rare in Iraq that a person enters politics who was not already seen as a leader of a local tribe or clan.

Did George W. Bush ever say on video that he wanted to go to war with Iraq because Saddam Hussein attempted to assassinate his father?

This is the closest comment President Bush (then Governor) ever made refurring to Saddam Hussein re his father. War with Iraq Dubya had actually been planning to go after Saddam Hussein for years. As a matter of fact, almost two years before the Pentagon/WTC attacks, George gave an interview to the BBC in November 1999 which laid out his plans for his father's antagonist during the Gulf War: REPORTER: Would Saddam Hussein outlive a second President Bush? GOVERNOR BUSH: [Laughs] Very good question. Uh, I think the interesting thing -- [laughs] -- um, uh -- Saddam Hussein, uh -- really did last longer than anybody envisioned. He did. REPORTER: Including your father. GOVERNOR BUSH: Including my father, absolutely right. [...] No one envisioned Saddam, at least at that point in history, no one envisioned him still standing. It's time to finish the task.

Iraq is a multilingual country. In the Arabic-speaking portions they use the word 3alka (علكة). In the Kurdish speaking portions the word is Benîşt (بنيشت).

(It is worth noting that Kurdish has two major dialects, Sorani, which is more popular in Iraq and is written with the Arabic alphabet, and Kurmanji, which is more popular in Turkey - and the Kurdish world overall, which is written with the Arabic Alphabet. Both spellings of Benisht, in Kurmanji and Sorani are provided above.)

What is Iraq's military like today?

Iraq's current military underwent a significant overhaul in 2010 right before the US draw-down. They were officially designated as a recognized military, and even received new uniforms.

Obviously since the fall of the Saddam regime and the past Iraqi Militia there has been a complete change-over. During this process the country must accept virtually any person into its military; therefore there are people who are significantly older, or people who wouldnt be accepted into a developed nation's military.

Also understand that nearly every person within Iraq's military is new to the program.... so everyone has to be trained from basic skills on up. It isnt like a developed military thats been around for hundreds of years where there is a clear cycle to its training operations.

When Iraq's military was being conceived there obviously had to be a rank structure. Not everyone could come in and be the same lowest rank. So, the US, and Iraqi governments developed a plan to allow people to use money to buy their way into the Iraqi Military and pay for the rank they wanted to be. Using this system allowed for the more responsible, better-off, educated Iraqis to come in as officers, where the poor, middle-class Iraqi's were enlisted men.

Obviously, this same system was flawed and there were indications of terrorist organizations sponsoring individuals into the Iraqi Military causing a influx on crooked service members at the higher ranks.

From being deployed there, and working closely with the Iraqi Army, there is a lack of pride among soldiers because of the situation. They lack respect for one another, and a lot of them are in it for the pay only because of the lack of jobs in the Iraqi economy; therefore they do not want to learn, train, or participate in missions. Many of the enlisted men lack respect for the upper-enlisted / officers because they know they bought their rank...

Iraq's Air Force is the most underdeveloped of all branches, the Navy is only slightly better. They do not have a Marine Corps, and the Iraqi Army is large, and the most developed. The bases are some of the old military bases in the Saddam regime as well as bases the US military has handed over to the Iraqi government.

The equipment used, such as vehicles, planes, etc. are all old US military items that have been refurbished, and given to the Iraqi government. They are not at all in the condition you would see in the present day US military.

That's about as much as I know about the Iraqi military. I know it doesn't include statistics, but it is more a first-hand account.

Why did the United States support Iran in the Iran-Iraq War?

The United States sided with Iraq instead of Iran because the Iranian Revolution of February 11, 1979 had just deposed the US installed puppet-dictator, Mohamed Reza Shah, effectively cutting-off US control of Iran and its abundant oil resources.

However, one must remember that money was made by US defense contractors arming the two sides as they brutally killed one another for the decade long war.

What happens if a soldier commits a crime but no one finds out about it until he is in Iraq?

It makes no difference where he is, if the civilian law enforcement authorities notify the military that sufficient probable cause exists that he committed the crime, the military can take him into custody and ship him back to the US for trial. Depending on the seriousness of the offense the civil authorities might cede authority for his prosecution and punishment to the military justice system and he might be court martialled.
