When was the cat scan invented?

Computed Tomography (CT) imaging is also known as "CAT scanning" (Computed Axial Tomography). Tomography is from the Greek word "tomos" meaning "slice" or "section" and graphia meaning "describing". CT was invented in 1972 by British engineer Godfrey Hounsfield of EMI Laboratories, England and by South Africa-born physicist Allan Cormack of Tufts University, Massachusetts. Hounsfield and Cormack were later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their contributions to medicine and science.

What causes sed rate to be high?

What causes Erythrocyte sedimentation rates to be high?

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), also called a sedimentation rate is the rate at which red blood cells precipitate in a period of 1 hour. This indicates a degree of inflammation. The test is performed by putting anti-coagulated blood in an upright tube, called a Westergren tube. The rate at which the red blood cells settle to the bottom is measured and reported in mm/h (millimeters per hour).

ESR is governed by the balance between pro-sedimentation factors, mainly fibrinogen, and those factors resisting sedimentation, i.e the negative charge of the erythrocytes (zeta potential). If there is an inflammatory process in action, there is a high proportion of fibrinogen in the blood and this results in red blood cells sticking to each other. The red cells form stacks called 'rouleaux' and these settle more quickly.

ESR increases where there is inflammation. ESR also increases in pregnancy or rheumatoid arthritis.

How long does it take to test DNA?

Depends on the technology used. DNA sequencing for forensic or paternity, or bone marrow transplant can take at least 24 hours for just the testing, then the data is checked and rechecked by several scientists. Then the report is sent . all this can take an additional 2 weeks depending on the workload as some if it is batched with other samples. Lower technology DNA testing for simple disease association or solid organ transplants can take as little as 6 hours, but again, is batched with other samples, and reviewed several times before release, so maybe a week for that testing. All this varies by the lab, and workload.

Who invented the idea of blood bank?

Are you serious Dr Charles Drew invented the blood bank and it helped people a lot.

The above statement is completely inaccurate. Drew did contribute significantly setting up a large scale blood bank infrastructure before WWII. The Soviets however set up the first blood banks in the 1930's. The first blood bank in the US, and the very term "blood bank", was set up by a Hungarian-American Jew named Bernard Fantus in Chicago in 1937.

Dr. Charles Drew was certainly an extraordinary figure but he is surrounded by a cloud of pure mythology.

What kind of drug test does parole use?

Honestly, everything. They test for everything. You are better off staying 100% clean. I am a 3rd year criminal justice major and can say from experience of witnessing alone, if you are doing it they will see it. Even alcohol use will likely be detected. If you have a known substance abuse problem they will do extensive blood tests constantly. Even if you don't have a prior, they will test you. One slightly positive test and they will do blood tests. My advice: stay clean.

Is it legal to Drug test you without your knowledge?

If one is in a coma, it would be permissible to do this - the medical people need to find out what caused the coma or trauma. If the choices were given that I would die without a drug test, or I could live a normal life if one was done without my knowledge, I would certainly opt for the latter.

Is it okay to shower with your sister?

That would depend on many things. Your gender, your age, her age, etc. It is not uncommon for young siblings of any gender to bathe or shower together, but if there becomes any hint of sexual overtones, the practice should probably stop. Ultimately, if you and your sister, and your parents have no issues with it, there's probably no harm in it.

Can a o positive mother and o negative father have a b negative child?

Yes, it is possible for an O positive mother and an O negative father to have a B negative child. The child would have inherited one O gene from the mother and one O gene from the father, but could have received a B gene from each parent, resulting in a B blood type. The negative Rh factor would have also been inherited from the father.

Is the any risk for a mother with RH positive blood giving birth to a child with RH negative?

No there is not. There is only a risk of Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn if the mother were Rh negative and the child Rh positive. In this scenario, during birth the fetal blood cells may enter the mother's blood stream of the mother. Since the mother doesn't have Rh antigens, her immune system sees the cells as a foreign substance and develops an anti-RH antibody to eliminate them. This would not do anything to the first negative child, however, if she gave birth to a second Rh positive child, the anti-Rh antibodies that are now in her blood stream would see the fetus Rh positive antigens as a threat and try to eliminate them. This would often result in death of the fetus or serious birth defects.
