How was the laundry done in the 1800s?

The middle of the 19th century witnessed the appearance of the first mechanical washing machines. Typically a closed tub with wooden paddles (agitators, later made of metal) allowed laundresses to work in an upright position and not get their hands wet so much. Laundry was no longer the laborious and time-consuming ritual it had been in the past. The dirt and bad smells that accompanied overcrowding in the cities were less and less acceptable to people, and this led to steady scientific progress. But before washing machines were generally in use, large towns installed large public wash-houses or laundries. The

fixed tub with a hand-propelled rotating agitator was the forerunner of the rotating tub (gyrator) machine. The forerunner of the modern drum machine that extracts the water during a rapid spin cycle would not appear until into the 20th century. Laundry remained a ritual in the U.S. throughout the 19th century. A written testimony by a late-19th century author in Practical Housekeeping reads: "Laundry and cooking go hand in hand . . . On washing and ironing days, it is inadvisable to cook steak or fry fish, due to the smell. In addition, no spinach, split peas, green beans (which need stringing), or stewed apples [should be prepared] because these all take too long to prepare and time should be given to the laundry. More suitable dishes would be potatoes, pasta, rice and corn, with a dessert of baked apples with cream: Quick, easy and very tasty." Developments in laundry products didn't keep pace with the technological advances in washing machines: Until the end of the 19th century, people still washed their clothes with soap flakes. Synthetic detergents would not appear for another 10 to 20 years,

during World War I.

How do you get a grease stain out of linen fabric?

  1. Blot up as much of the grease as you can in a clean, dry, paper towel.
  2. Pretreat the stain, and then soak it in cold water. Do not use hot water, which could make the stain worse if it is protein based.
  3. If the stain is still visible after about 20 minutes, rub detergent on it and machine wash it in cold water. If the stain is gone wash it as you normally would.

How do you rewire a clothesline?

Assuming that your old clothesline was done with eye bolts on one or both ends attach the new wire to the end that has no bolts first. Then loosen the nuts so that the eye of the bolt is extended as far through the cross bar as possible. Then pull the new wire as tight as possible and twist it firmly so that it will not come loose. What do I do when I use too much laundry soap?

If the soap is spilling out of the washer, then stop the wash cycle, set it to spin, and let it spin the soapy water out. Then reset the washer for a full wash and rinse cycle to get out all of the soap. If you set it for a rinse cycle only, it won't remove all of the suds, resulting in dingy laundry.

How do you bid a 26000 sq ft building for cleaning?

I would recommend that all professional bids be in writing, on formal letterhead and mailed or hand delivered to the company that you are proposing your bid for. All bids should be signed by both parties, once agreed to and include:

  • A Cover Page
  • Introduction Letter
  • Cost
  • Service Requirements
  • Terms
  • References

There are several on-line commercial cleaning bid generators like http://www.cleaningalliance.com that allow you to input the information based on your client and generate a professional bid that you can print and send to your potential client. This site also offers a commercial cleaning calculator that can give you an estimate for the cleaning based on square footage, type of office, hourly wage of workers and clientele.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several things you must determine. First; the cleaning frequency (is it 5 times a week or 21.6 times a month). Next you need to know the cleaning requirements (will it be a deep clean nightly or a partial clean 4 nights and a deep clean one night). Other things you must consider are the expectation levels (immaculate white glove cleaning or a quick touch up), occupancy density (high, med or low) use of the building (heavy, med or light) as they all come into play.

From this you can develop an estimated production rate. A 26K building might run from 2,600 to 4,200 sq. ft. per hour depending upon all the above variables. So this building could run from 6-10 hours per night. Then you would start with your local janitorial labor rate, add payroll expenses, all of your overhead and then a net profit (most likely 20-30%). Your quote will be for the monthly amount.

One way to get garlic butter stains out of a couch is to pour some baking soda over the stain, let it sit for about 20 minutes, and vacuum the excess off. If this does not remove the stain, then use a cup of warm water with one tablespoon of a mild detergent to moisten the stain and gently scrub it. However, you should check to see if the couch material will not discolor with this method.

Can satin clothes drip dry?

Satin is often hand wash only, which means that drip dry is the best way to dry them. That said, drip dry should not mean literally dripping. Lay the clothes out on a clean towel in one layer, roll that towel up tightly, then unroll the towel and hang the pieces up to dry. This will prevent them from dripping but won't damage the fabric like wringing it out can.
