Malcolm Little was born in Nebraska in 1925. He changed his name to Malcolm X after converting to Islam in the early 1950s. He was an advocate of "black power." Malcolm X co-authored the book 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X,' which was published after his assassination in 1965.

The actions of police and other authorities increased tension during the civil rights movement by resorting to physical violence to force them into submission. Fire hoses, attack dogs billy clubs and tear gas were some of the methods used against unarmed and helpless black people and their supporters. Racism and segregated public areas were still in effect in many cities and became hotbeds for many confrontations and riots that are an huge part of African American history and give much credit to the fight for equality. Law enforcement DID increase the tension during the Civil Rights Movement but force, no matter how excessive, can never decrease the human spirit in search of truth and justice.
We must understand that most of the white police officers and people in authority were members of the klan and its "off-branches." Although they were supposed to "protect and serve," they only "protected" the racist way of life and "served" the needs and wants of racial segregationists.

"Black is Beautiful" was a rallying cry, a movement against the idea that Blacks have less attractive or desirable characteristics and to discourage changing the natural African features. The slogan intended to discourage people from feeling they needed to change by:

- straightening their hair
- having plastic surgery to make a narrower nose
The slogan was meant to create self pride and pride within the race,
so people (especially girls and women) did not continue to feel they needed to alter their physical being just to fit in. They called this an internalized racism that Blacks carried inside and needed to end.

The first calculating machine that included the concepts of a modern computer (data storage, programming, I/O) was the Difference Engine, conceived by Charles Babbage in the mid-19th century. It was never fully constructed because the metallurgy of the time did not permit exact enough casting and machining for it to work accurately. A 20th-century effort to reproduce Babbage's work using modern metalworking techniques showed that his Engine was in fact practical. Many companies developed and sold functional mechanical calculators in the 19th century. However they did nothing but add, subtract, multiply and divide, and could not store data or programs. The Nation of Islam (which is distinct from mainstream Islam), attracted adherents in much the same way that other African-American religions attracted adherents. It was able to capitalize on the sense of alienation and inferiority that African-Americans felt in the United States because of the segregation and racism that prevailed. Nation of Islam also had the distinction of not being a form of Christianity, which meant that they could also say that Black Salvation did not require a "White-Man's" religion.

According to Malcolm X, there was a significant difference between the organization he wanted to build and what the Nation of Islam stood for. He made it extremely clear that he wanted to create a political organization where American Blacks could assert themselves against the economic, political and spiritual problems of Blacks in the United States. It would be different then the Nation of Islam in that it would embrace Black people of all faiths not just Islamic Blacks.

If the person is grouchy, bad mannered, swears around you, isn't respectful of you and you make excuses such as "Oh well, he/she could just be having a bad day" to "he/she really loves me and just sounds off like this around me because he/she loves and trusts me" are excuses! The guy has NO respect for you. Dare to be your own person and expect respect and having ANYONE in your life treat you as well as you treat them. These are signs of a person that doesn't have your best interests at heart: If the person makes dates and never shows up and then lies about it; If they are disrespectful of your family and friends. If they constantly swear around you and say little else. If they ignore what you have to say. If they make love to you and simply walk out the door without as much as a goodbye. If they flirt with the opposite sex or cheat. These are a but a few signs. The rule of thumb I lead my life by is, "if I treat others with respect and they don't treat me the same way I at least let them know how I feel and if they don't clean up their act then I kick them to the curb." Sometimes it really hurts my heart, but many times it's refreshing!

Non-Violence The Black Power Movement was different for the beliefs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. because the Black Power Movement was spearheaded by groups like the Black Panthers and Malcolm X which had an ideology that leaned toward Black Nationalism and equality by "any means necessary." They demanded justice by force if necessary whereas Dr. King's ideologies work within the system and had a totally nonviolence doctrine.
