Push the mirror glass down all the way to the bottom, then you can access the retaining clip that's on top. Use a small screwdriver or similar to pop off the upper clip. Then just pop the mirror glass off of the motor. To re-install insert the glass at the bottom first, and then slide up and push on the catches. Then re-install the clip over the motor. The mirror has a install position for the clip, position the clip over the top of the plastic tab on top, then bend it back down and under the lower notch to hold it in position.

When the batter supplies 12volts of electricity to thw atarting motor and the motor then bwgins to spin which eventually activate the alternator and other appliance on the engine all of this is mechanical so then the alternator will convert this energy when its shaft spins into electrical engery thus supplying energy to other parts of the vehicle. I had the exact same problem on my wife's 2001 SLK 320. The problem was the PSE unit that controls the locking and security system. This is a combined vacuum pump and electronics unit located in the passenger side of the trunk. It is easy to remove the PSE once the spare tire and jack are removed. It is wrapped inside a foam box that all comes out together. The cause of the problem is water flowing down the PSE wiring harness and corroding the connectors and circuit boards. A new PSE is about $1300.00. I repaired mine by disassembling the PSE unit and cleaning the corrosion on the circuit board with a dry tooth brush and replacing two of the connector pins. The pin replacement is not a job for a novice, but it can be done. Good luck.
