Why does your 2001 Mercury Cougar make a loud humming noise?
I had a very loud humming noise coming from my 99' cougar. I talked to many mechanics and nobody knew what it was. I looked it up online and found two sources( listed at bottom) that said it was the idle air control valve. I replaced the part and my car runs great without the horrible loud noise.
well, you can pull the fuse. its number 25, its yellow, and its under the drivers dash. but that will negate the power locks as well. i know that if you have locked your car with the keys, and then unlock it manually, or from inside the car, it will set the alarm off. other than that, you most likely will have to have the system removed. i have been told its persnickety.
What are the fuses for on a Mercury Mountaineer 1998?
On any vehicle, the fuses control all the electrical functions. Some may not be as logically organised as you'd think. A wiring diagram (and the ability to read it ) are necessary to figure most things out. Consult the drivers manual. The drivers manual will have the information as to which fuse covers which circuit.

This is the low coolant light. It will go off for no reason on most '99-'00 vehicles if the level drops into the 'good' range, you need to keep the coolant topped off over the MAX line by about 1" to keep the light off.
Don't drive with the low coolant light on thinking everything will be fine, it may have gone off when it was at MAX, but nothing will tell you if you're running low after that.
Check the throttle linkage. I once saw a dragonfly that had been caught in the linkage, making the engine race like that. Start with the easy stuff first.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 1991 Mercury Cougar 5.0L?
There should be 2 - one is under the car near the right rear wheel well. It's a stone/rock cover over it - I know that has to be removed before you can access it. The secondary one is in the engine compartment, but my '91 Cougar LS 3.8L service guide book says "it should never need replacing".
Will a cougar transmission interchange with an explorer transmission?
It dependsprimarily on the engine in the Explorer, and the engine in the Cougar, and the years of each. If the Cougar is 1989-1997, equipped with a V8 (which would mean the tranny is an AOD - specifically, 4R70W) and the Explorer is a 5.0 between 1994 and 2001, it'll have the same transmission. Of course, if you're taking a transmission out of the Cougar and in to the Explorer, the gearset won't be heavy enough, and you'll just end-up ruining it. In the other direction, you might notice a loss of performance because of the gearing. But, it's pheasible if your options are limited.
How do you remove top bolt on rear strut on a 1999 Mercury Cougar?
Lower the rear seat on the side your removing; Remove the trim panel that goes over the quarter glass; Remove the trim panel that extends from rear seat release lever, towards the rear body panel; Remove the small piece of flexible rubber sound deading compound over the opening that contains the upper portion of the strut mounting nut. You will need to use a 3/8 inch ratchet with a deep well socket to remove the nut. Place the socket on the nut first, then place ratchet onto the socket. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. Have helper to hold unit in place, to replace. However, placing a small floor jack under the strut and jacking into place will work, if your working alone. After install,,, double check. Loose strut nut results in a hard to find rattle that sounds like loose exhaust.
When I was doing stuff like this I would pull the carpet back usually on the passenger side and then drill a hole from the inside out. Only go just enough to just go through the metal then you wont hit anything behind it. Drill the hole slightly larger so that you can put a rubber grommet in first. Then run the wire through the grommet. If you dont then the wire will eventually wear through and will cause a short circuit. Then just run the wiring around the edge of the intierior and into the trunk. Good luck.

The sound you are hearing could be coming from a starved or defective power steering pump. On front wheel drive cars worn cv joints can make a fuss. For safety sake I would get this looked at asap.
