Check the condition of the accessory drive serpentine belt, belt idler pulley and belt tensioner pulley bearings.

I was looking at the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide and it shows :

In the Power Distribution Box ( which is " live " ) located in the drivers side of the engine compartment :

Cartridge fuses ( # 7 / 20 amp / Power Point # 2 ) ( #9 / 20 amp / Power Point # 1 )

In the right front passenger footwell , below the dash

In the Power Distribution Box in the engine compartment ( the PD BOX is " live " )

Fuse # 3 is a 20 amp maxi-fuse for the fuel pump relay and RAP module

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and then remove the positive cable
2. Remove the battery heat shield
3. Remove the battery hold-down clamp bolt
4. Lift out battery

Open the drivers door and there should be an information sticker on the end of the

door that shows the original size tires on the vehicle from the factory

According to the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide :

With engine oil filter change :

( 4.7 litres / 5.0 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 engine oil for the 4.0 liter V6 and the

5.0 liter V8 engines )

The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

The 2002 Mercury Mountaineer has hook-end wiper arms on both front and rear. See the Sources and Related Links section below for wiper blade installation videos and correct attachment/length wiper blade sizes. Also, if you purchase the replacement blades first and there will be additional instructions/illustrations on the replacement packages. Locate and press the tab or button where the wiper blade is inserted into the hook of the wiper arm and pull wiper blade out of hook. You may have to rotate and flex the blade to make enough clearance for the hook to pass through. Very simple.

According to the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer owners manual :

In the Power Distribution Box ( which is " live " ) located in the engine compartment near the brake fluid reservoir :

( mini fuse # 28 is a 20 amp fuse for the heated SEATS )

If the fluid is ready to be changed, it will make a screaching noise when turned to extreme left or extreme right.

Overdrive is the normal position - if you are in hilly areas and find the transmission

keeps shifting back and forth between overdrive and drive , you can use the

overdrive cancel switch to shut off the overdrive feature and if you are towing

something you also want to shut off the overdrive

The easiest way to reset the antitheft system in your 1998 Mercury is to remove the antitheft system fuse. Keep the fuse out for 10 seconds and then replace it to its original position.

In a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer :

The fuel pump relay is in the power distribution box ( which is " live )

located in the engine compartment , on the drivers side , near the firewall

It is relay # 6 ( one of the large relays , in the second row from the drivers

side , and second large relay from the FRONT end of the box )

Standard 2 Piece Harness Up To Late 1990

There is an actuator at the left rear of the passenger compartment. The plastic gears get stripped or broken and when the rear air or heat is activated a servo which is trying to make ajustments to the rear control is clunking when trying to move the gears. There is more than one actuator used in these models, so to replace it you will need to access that area and either remove the broken one and take it to the parts man or let your dealer fix it. If you can stop the clicking by changing the rear air temp, this could be the problem. This would be the ac pump cycling this is normal most of the time the only time the pump runs continuesly is when the unit is set to max ac try that first if it still cycles in high your R134a pressure my be low, I dont recall the proper pressure how ever I was able to recharge mine my self by buying the R134A and recharge kit at the auto parts store. the clerk should be able to look that info up for you. It is a relitive easy task.

5W-30 , is the preferred oil for the 4.0 liter V6 , according to the Owner Guide

K in the fender wells if it is a 5.o l they are left and right of cyl head under exhaust headers
