Bank 1 is the passenger side of the engine and bank 2 is the drivers side of the

engine on your 1997 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 liter V8 engine

Check the Vehicle Emission Control Information ( VECI ) decal located in the

engine compartment ( it will show what type of spark plugs to use and the

spark plug gap )

For a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer :

In the fuse panel below the dash , on the drivers side :

Fuse ( # 24 ) is a ( 15 amp fuse ) for the cigarette lighter and OBD II

Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant ( green color ) or Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant ( yellow color ) Use the color that came in your vehicle or is in it now

I'm not a mechanic / technician but the first thing I would check is the engine

oil ( see if the engine oil looks different than it does normally , milky looking

maybe , or if the oil level has gone up ) that would indicate the engine coolant

is leaking into the engine oil from perhaps a bad head gasket

I own a 200 Mountainer and I have taken mine off roading though the mud and over medum obstacles, so I don't think a beach will be much problem. The AWD system is not well suited for off roading because it does not have a low gear. Unless you really strain the drive train you should be fine. Id recommend lowering the tire pressure on your vehicle to give yourself a bigger foot print for better traction.

I'm not sure if Mercury followed Ford with the introduction of the new HVAC system in 2003. That is probably the case and the system and problems will be the same as the Ford Explorer. Pictures to identify which system you have and diagnostic processes are available on heatertreater.net.

According to the Owner Guide

If you have replaced the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, then the problem could be the water pump bearing, alternator bearing, camshaft bearings, power steering pump or any of the items attached to the serpentine belt.

You may try to isolate the sound by listening with a length of rubber hose and place it near the areas where the 'noise' you hear may be emanating from. Just be careful not to get the hose too close to the engine fan or belts as it can get caught and cause damage or injury.

Actually , bank 2 is the drivers side of the engine in a Mercury Mountaineer

the instrument cluster has to be removed to gain acces to the bulbs .the lower trim under the steering wheel has to be removed.theres 2 peices,one plastic one metal.then you remove the radio bezal,2 screws above the climate switches.then remove6 screws retaining the inst.cluster cover.4 screws retain the cluster,the shift indicator has to be removed from the cluster. disconnect 3 or 4 wire connectors.and pull cluster out.flip upside down and there should be 6 large black bulb sockets turn counter clock wise and remove.i would suggest replacing all 6 bulbs.

Unfournately, those are signs that your engine is worn and will need to be rebuilt, or replaced. Those are signs of worn rings your probably getting little or no compression.

There isn't one. In 1997, mountaineers were either 2 wheel drive or all wheel drive. Not 4 wheel drive

It's because your car is a whack car. Your best choice would be to lose the piece of junk!!

Check the power window fuses and the relay first. If all of the windows do not work then it is a power problem with the whole window system.

( # 17 ) is a 25 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter

Always depends how you drive, but my experience has been: city stop and go: 16.5 to 17.5; highway: 18.5 to 20.

how to change a water pump on a 2002 mercury mountineer

I have an 01 mountaineer and had heater issue. My heater stoped working. I replaced the heter and air controll unit in the dash and it worked fine. However!!!!!!! I did some work on my suv,installed amp, spkrs ect. In doing so I unpluged my battery overnight. When I was done installing audio equt. I noticed my heater stoped workig again. All I could hear is a clicking sound in glove compartmet.be fore replacing dash unit I decided to figure it out on my own as to why this keeps happining.the mountaineer has a kill mecanizem behind the glove comp. Pull it down an youll see a small black box with 2 wires pluged into it.unplug it, dissconect the battery. After an hour or so, hook up battery an start the car. Plug in the box till the clicking stops and unplug it and leave it. I tryed it over and over to make sure I wasnt crazy......i dont know why, but it worked everytime. Hope this helpd you.
