How can you tell if the front or rear struts are bad on a Ford Taurus-Mercury Sable?

MacPherson struts are a variant of the traditional shock absorber - and performs the same role.

In that respect, you can use the same criteria for assessing condition:

  • When pushing the front/back end of the vehicle down, how long does it take for the bouncing back to stop. The more the number of bounces the more worn the strut is.

  • Inspect for leaks - evidence of physical damage

  • Mileage - not surprisingly, strut manufacturers advise for a routine replacement at some mileage interval. Not exactly sure, but seems I've heard 50/60,000 miles or os.
Replacing struts is not for the faint-of-heart, or novice backyard mechanic. I've seen some that were 'relatively easy' such as the Escort / Tracer, and others like the Taurus / Sable that jump up to the 8 score on a 1-10 hardness / difficulty rating scale (that I made up).

There'll be specialized tools and removing / disconnecting some of the fundamental components of the front steering & suspension. And there is danger if you're compressing the coil springs yourself.

Do your homework, have a manual or lots of printouts on-hand before getting started.

What is the yellow indicator light that looks like a gear with an exclamation point in the middle on a 2000 Ford Taurus?

Sounds like the Hazard warning light. Check to see if they are on. Look in your owner's manual if you have one. If not, you need to get one. I have the same problem in my 2001. It is the Check Transaxle light. Most likely dealing with the transmission. Probably just low fluid.

Why is the left driver side wheel making a squeeking noise when you trun the wheel to the left on your 2002 mercury sable?

The first thing I would suspect is a wheel that is way out of alignment. Have it checked. Depending on what you mean by squeeking, it might also be a bad CV (continuous velocity) joint. This is part of the 1/2 axel between the transmission and the wheel. The last time I paid someone to replace one, it was about $150.00. Ever since then, I've replace my own.

How do you program a keyless entry remote on a 1993-1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable?

See "Related Questions" below for Keypad programming and factory keypad code locations

All of these instructions are also found in the respective Owners Manuals - See "Related Questions"

This applies to the OEM 4-button remotes.

For Taurus models, 93 - 95:

Locate the programming connector in the left rear quarter panel area inside the trunk. You'll have to pull back the fabric liner to access it. Look for a little black boot about the size of a grown man's thumb. -See Related Links Below-

- Turn ignition to RUN or ACC. Do NOT start the car.
- Momentarily jump pins in programming connector. I just used a kitchen knife. It's very low voltage and the jump occurs directly between the pins so don't worry about any shock. -See link to closeup view in Related Links below-

- All doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode.
- Press any button on 1st transmitter.
- Door locks will cycle to confirm programming.
- Press any button on 2nd transmitter (up to 4 transmitters total possible).
- Turn ignition to OFF.
- Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.

For Taurus models 96 - 97:

- Cycle ignition from OFF to RUN 5 times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. (this may take 8 times - I'm not sure)

What sensor do you replace on a 1999 mercury sable that stalls after 20 min of driving then starts and runs fine after 45 min of sitting no engine light on and just smogged and is not hot?

It sounds to me like you have a bad E.G.R. valve... the E.G.R valve is right on the top of the engine. should be pretty easy to get to. if not, it could be you mass air sensor. It would definately be one of the 2... Try the E.G.R valve first though. Probably gonna run you about 100 bucks for it.

Were is the flasher located on a1991 Mercury Sable gs?

Most Flashers are located on the fuse panel, generally on the left side of the car, up under the drivers left knee, or in that general area. An access panel may need to be removed to get to the fuses and flasher. Or, it may require getting down on your back and looking up under the dash.

What does the circle d on the shift column mean?

Overdrive. The transmission contains a final section that causes the output to turn at a faster rate than the input. When this happens it is refered to as "overdriving". Very common in new vehicles as once at speed the overdrive kicks in and the rpms become lower to keep the car at the same speed, hence increasing gas mileage. Press lightly on the accelerator and you can feel the overdrive gear kick out and the car then begins to accelerate. The circle d refers to overdrive gear in your transmission , which is less than a 1:1 or direct drive gear ratio. This gearing lowers your engine rpm for fuel economy but effects pulling power of your vehicle. In a truck there is normally an overdrive disconnect switch on the end of the shift lever.

Why does white smoke come out of the tailpipe on your 1994 Mercury Sable?

IF it is actually smoke, then that suggests that engine crankcase lubricating oil is getting into the combustion chamber(s), most commonly caused by worn oil rings on the piston(s), or worn valve stem guides. On the other hand, what appears to be smoke could be nothing more than than the water vapor [a byproduct of the burning of the fuel] in the exhaust gas which condenses upon contact with the cooler outside air. This generally occurs when the outside air temperature is cool, or cold, before the engine warms up to normal operating temperature.

You just bought a 98 mercury sable have no book and can't tell if it has a CD player it has a button for disc 1-6 and shuffle when you press the CD button it says no dj help?

I would say that you don't have one. The radios are generic they can be used with or w/o CD changers. It is just the difference on the CD changer remote wire running to the back of the radio. There are only a few places that would be located. Trunk, glove box, middle console, or underneath one the seats. These are really the only places that the factory puts them. Hope this helps.

Answer

In the 1998 Sable - Taurus, the CD changer is in the back left corner of the trunk. In the wagon, the changer is over on the other side on the right.
