Mercury Sable

Manufactured by Ford Motor Company, the Mercury Sable was offered as a mid-size sedan in 1986-2005 and as a full-size sedan in 2008-2009. One significant feature of the vehicle was its front light bar – a lamp fitted between the vehicle’s front headlamps.

What does the circle d on the shift column mean?

Overdrive. The transmission contains a final section that causes the output to turn at a faster rate than the input. When this happens it is refered to as "overdriving". Very common in new vehicles as once at speed the overdrive kicks in and the rpms become lower to keep the car at the same speed, hence increasing gas mileage. Press lightly on the accelerator and you can feel the overdrive gear kick out and the car then begins to accelerate. The circle d refers to overdrive gear in your transmission , which is less than a 1:1 or direct drive gear ratio. This gearing lowers your engine rpm for fuel economy but effects pulling power of your vehicle. In a truck there is normally an overdrive disconnect switch on the end of the shift lever.

Why does white smoke come out of the tailpipe on your 1994 Mercury Sable?

IF it is actually smoke, then that suggests that engine crankcase lubricating oil is getting into the combustion chamber(s), most commonly caused by worn oil rings on the piston(s), or worn valve stem guides. On the other hand, what appears to be smoke could be nothing more than than the water vapor [a byproduct of the burning of the fuel] in the exhaust gas which condenses upon contact with the cooler outside air. This generally occurs when the outside air temperature is cool, or cold, before the engine warms up to normal operating temperature.

You just bought a 98 mercury sable have no book and can't tell if it has a CD player it has a button for disc 1-6 and shuffle when you press the CD button it says no dj help?

I would say that you don't have one. The radios are generic they can be used with or w/o CD changers. It is just the difference on the CD changer remote wire running to the back of the radio. There are only a few places that would be located. Trunk, glove box, middle console, or underneath one the seats. These are really the only places that the factory puts them. Hope this helps.

Answer

In the 1998 Sable - Taurus, the CD changer is in the back left corner of the trunk. In the wagon, the changer is over on the other side on the right.

Is there a coolant pressure relief - bleed valve on a Sable - Ford Taurus?

There is no coolant pressure relief valve. Just have to wait for the engine to cool off sufficiently to safely remove the coolant reservoir cap.

There is also not a coolant bleed valve.

Here's are the coolant bleed/burp procedures

NEVER ever think of releasing a radiator - coolant cap when the engine is hot, or even warm!!!

Burping: In order to what is sometimes referred to as 'burping' the cooling system - getting a big air bubble out of the closed cooling system, you will actually need to have the car running with the cap off.

  1. During the initial fill, fill the coolant reservoir bottle to the top of the cold fill range.
  2. Set the temperature blend selector to the full warm position and the fan motor control to high for the front and rear heaters
  3. Start the vehicle with the reservoir cap off and allow to idle until the thermostat opens

NOTE: the coolant level will drop quite a bit when the thermostat opens - that's most of the air bubble in the system being driven to the top of radiator and escaping. Without the air, there's more room for coolant.

  4. Top off the coolant in the reservoir bottle to the top of the cold fill range,
  5. Install and tighten the reservoir cap.
  6. Increase the engine rpms to 3,000 for 15 seconds, and then return to idle for one minute.
  7. Repeat the previous step four times or until heat is coming from the rear unit while the vehicle is idling.
  8. Allow the vehicle to cool and top off the coolant in the reservoir to the cold fill range.

Note: if you find the heater going cool or cold when idling, that's a good indicator you might have to burp the system again. Equally likely just adding more coolant to the overflow reservoir will suffice too.

Did I mention to NEVER ever think of releasing a radiator cap when the engine is hot, or even warm? !!!

How do you know when your neutral safety switch is bad on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

From the "Related Question" below:

Symptoms

(Each bullet point is a symptom that doesn't necessarily happen at the same time):

  • Loss of power steering assist, all window controls (none are lit up), rear window defrost controls, half of the MFS controls (only Hi, Lo, and turn signals work), and radio only when car is in R, (D), D, and 1. Everything functions fine when put into P or N.
  • Transmission randomly downshifts/upshifts suddenly while driving.

Where is the fuel lever in the Ford Taurus?

"fuel lever"... Not a common-usage term that I'm familiar with.

Trying to a best-guess, this could be in reference to the fuel gauge sending unit.

That is part of the fuel pump assembly - separate, but packaged together - inside the gas tank.

Unfortunately there is no conventional way to access it without dropping the gas tank.

Why does your dome light stay on while you drive your 1996 trans am?

If you have the door shut and the interior lamp will not go out, it is most likely because you have a defective door jam switch. The switch will either be located in the door jam and will look like a small plunger, or will be integrated into the hinge itself and will not be visible without removing the door panel. If the switch is integrated in the hinge itself, it ususally requires replacement of the entire part ( available at your dealer ) and the switch is not serviced seperately. If it is separate ( plunger type ) it should be available at most aftermarket part stores for less than $15. On some rare occasions both types may be " blown out " with compressed air to clean them and will sometimes work again without replacing them. This is because they usually fail because of dust and grime fouling the contacts in the switch. Unfortunately this will only work about one out of ten times. Maybe this will help. Best of luck.

You recently installed an Airaid intake your Mark VIII idles rough and surges any help?

This maybe the problem. If you used an oil impregnaged air filter you may have oil on the mass air flow sensor thin filiment wire. This will cause the engine to idle badly. Remove the mass air flow sensor and you will see 2 really thin wires. Now you can go to the store and some auto parts places sell spray to clean the wires. I would use brake clean non clorinated!!!! do not spray full force but just a little and let dry completely. This is very common with oil impregnated filters. Ford does recommend that you do not use such air filters on mass air flow vehicles.

Location of OBD ll 93 sable?

The 1993 Sable uses the old OBD l PCM (powertrain control module). It is located under the dash behind the glove compartment. If you are removing the PCM the electrical connector is on the firewall inside the engine compartment. There is a small bolt in the connector that you loosen as the connector is being pulled out. If you are looking for the diagnostic connectors, they are on the passenger side near the firewall, in the engine compartment.

How do you fix a poor acceleration and idling problem?

I experienced poor acceleration in my '95 Chevy blazer, which eventually became so severe that when accelerating, the engine nearly stalled. It turned out that my catalytic converter was disintegrating, and choking off the exhaust so severely that the backpressure was causing engine retardation. I took the vehicle to a muffler shop, where they performed a backpressure test on the exhaust to diagnose the problem. After replacing the catalytic converter, the problem was corrected.

Where is the cabin filter on a 2001 Taurus - Sable?

I also owns a 2001 Ford Taurus SE. I recently discovered that I have cabin filter in my car for AC even though I owned it for almost 7 years.

You will need to open the hood to locate it. It is located just under the dashboard AC vent on the passenger side. Removing the bolts will be required to remove the filter. It is almost the same size as the engine air filter if you ever seen one before.

I believe there is an instruction or mentioned in the owner's manual if you still have it.

In the 2000 Taurus Owners Manual, replacing the cabin filter starts around page 166. See "Related Questions" for free online copies of Owners Manuals

How do you replace the distributor on a 1996 or newer Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

There is no longer an ignition "distributor" on today's engine.

Electrical distribution is handled by the:

  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM),
  • camshaft position sensor (CPS)
  • ignition coil that looks like a rectangular distributor.

NOTE: 2000-2005 Duratec engines use Coil-on-Plug (COP) in lieu of a coilpack

By the way, there is also no longer an ignition control module - that job has been passed off to the PCM.

The "How do you know which wire goes where on the ignition coil and spark plugs on a Taurus - Sable" question below introduces the basics of ignition distribution - hopefully it will help folks transition from the old arrangement to the new.
