Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

How can you make your car run like new again or just run better?

Basically just do the little things, and tune the car up. A new set of spark plugs, change the oil, (if you get ambitious you could even take off the valve cover and completely clean it out with simple gree) put a new air filter in and if you have a fuel injected car, check to make sure the injectors aren't too dirty. Also, putting in a higher octane gasoline in improves performance in the vehicle, more than one would think. Basically just do the little things, and tune the car up. What is the fine for a loud muffler?

It is going to vary. Most law enforcement would probably give you a warning which would give you a chance to get it fixed.

Blowing white smoke out the exhaust at start up?

Blown cylinder head gasket , water from the cooling system is entering the cylinders via the head gasket thus emitting steam through the exhaust system. Depending on specifics of engine I have repaired this problem several times without prior mechanical knowledge simply by following insttructions in Hayes manuals, do not let garages fool you into the "oh the head will need lathed etc " just ensure that you keep pistons clear of any loose fragments from the old gaskets removal , the Hayes will guide you through this with a sufficient socket extension kit, no prob £50 -60 if you do it 300- 450 if a mechanic does it , for a ! hour job you gotta be kidding!

What is the loudest exhaust tip?

The loudest exhaust tip is the megaphone style. Though not commonly seen today because of styling changes and they are not in vogue anymore, they can dramatically make certain exhaust louder. They work the same way a musical instrument, (trumpet, tuba, trombone) work. Ever seen a cheerleader use a megaphone? They work off the same principal. Taking the wave length (sound) and tuning it to a amplified level. This may be a oversimplified way of explaining but choose wisely of which you use. Each size and construction can change the sound wave length as well as the structure of the exhaust leading up to it.

There is thick white cloudy smoke coming from the exhaust when the car is started?

Most likely your head gasket is blown, allowing engine coolant to seep into the combustion chamber and as it burns it burns white. Are you loosing engine coolant with no external leaks.. (no puddles on the ground)? If there isn't any external leaks, and the problem persists, then you need to do a compression test leak down test to verify the problem, and repair it immediately, before there is further damage.

Why is car blowing black smoke?

It is the car running too rich. or the car is using more gas than air.

How do you remove rusted threaded pipes?

You are going to need a good wrench with a long handle and some thread loosener. You need to soak the threads in liquid wrench or a similar lubricant as much as possible. This is necessairy to free the pipe as apposed to just twisting it off. Remember to thoroughly flush the pipe afterword, as some will get inside and you don't want thread loosener in your water supply. You can also use a "cheater bar," a bar or pipe used to extend the wrench handle, to give you more turque. Be carefull with this as you can twist the pipe off, ruining both fittings you are trying to save. Good luck, and hopefully your vocabulary is up to the task.

Does changing to a performance muffler effect emissions?

Mufflers only differ sound, not emissions. Same with a resonator.

What does water mean in the exhaust pipe?

Blown head gasket.

Imagine a cylinder with 4 slots around the outside of the cylinder, and then put a cap on the cylinder with corresponding slots so the slots all meet at the top but are kept separate to the cylinder and then you fill the slots with water, you could say you effectively have a "water jacket" around the cylinder. In order to keep the water out of the cylinder, you must have some sort of material to stop the water leaking in. The material is called a gasket. When it no longer seals, you then have a problem. The gasket is inexpensive but to get to it is time consuming and , thus expensive.

Sorry.

Actually, it is normal to see water coming out of a tailpipe. That is merely condensed water vapor as a by-product of the combustion process. Look around on a cold morning and you will see water vapor (white smoke) coming out of most cars. As the car warms up,the exhaust heats up ant the water vapor/water stops coming out of your tailpipe. Unles you smell or see anti-freeze coming out of the tailpipe, dont worry about the water.

Why do car run hot and white smoke from exhaust?

This can be caused by a cracked head or blown head gasket.

What would cause water condensation to come from the muffler when the vehible is not losing coolant or overheating and there is no water in the oil?

is there any formation of aquaregia inside a vehicle muffler..? any answers..!!

I assume you mean from the tail pipe. Water is a bi-product of combustion & is expelled with the exhaust. -LubeExpert

Why would white smoke come from the tailpipe of a 1999 Toyota Camry?

possible cylinder head fault or head gasket failer, may be valve or valve stem seal failer, easiest way to find out is do a compression test across all four cylinders.

Can an exhaust repaired with an exhaust bandage pass an MOT?

i have had a mot and been told by the mot bay Will_a_exhaust_bandage_pass_MOTthat if a leak in the exhaust doesn't leak then he may give an advise to correct the problem , if the exhaust isn't leaking fumes then the mot man should pass it as it legal to the mot book, if its not leaking and he fails it ask for an appeal form as this normally does the trick as they don't want the hassle, and tell the mot man you will replace that section of the exhaust asap and it will no longer be an issue this will normally get the car through mot for now :)

Why is white smoke and gas coming out of the tailpipe?

You have a blown head gasket or cracked head. STOPdriving this vehicle immediately or you will destroy the engine. You must have this repaired.

What is wrong with a muffler that leaks water?

I think what you are seeing is your muffler leaking condensation from a weep hole. This normal and will stop after your vehicle has reached full operating temperature.

How can you stop black smoke from coming from your exhaust pipe?

Black smoke is a sign of an overly rich fuel/air mixture, unlike blue smoke which is a sign of oil burning. Seek professional help.

Older Briggs and stratton 8hp horizontal shaft runs fine but the exhaust heats up to red hot in about 40 seconds you have checked the exhaust and it is clean and in good condition why is this?

Engines run by burning gas fumes- fire is hot- exhaust is therefore hot. Hot gases running through metal pipes will make the metal hot. Hence the reason for "Hot, do not touch" stickers on many small engine exhausts.

What causes a car to backfire?

usually late ignition timing could cause this or an excessive amount of fuel in the exhaust system.

answer

backfire can be caused by choke not shutting off completely, also could have a bad distributor cap, bad spark plugs, bad ignition condensor, bad plug leads, or to much fuel getting to carburetor system

Consider getting yourself a service manual as it contains many troubleshooting for your car. Comes very handy sometimes.

Can also be caused by crossed spark plug wires meaning they are not connected in the proper order

Also

Listen to the Signs of the Car talking to you,

Is the Backfire coming from the Tailpipe area or the Engine Compartment area?

Signs of backfire can be caused Vacuum Leak, in and around the Intake Manifold Base Gasket areas, and the Carb. Base or Throttle Body Base, and in any of the many different

Vacuum hoses/lines depending on your make or model, "Use Caution with what you use to seek out the Vacuum leaks, as many aresol base products contain a petroleum base

which can cause severe flash fires,

( especially on and around HOT Engine Parts & Faulty or Loose Plug wires )

in Running Conditions.

Always RememberSAFETY FIRST,You want to drive it after you fix it,"NOT look a pictures of its chard remains,in a Hospital Burn Ward."

Be Safe Now / Cruise Longer

It could also be the contact set / points gap if this has recently been replaced/ adjusted.
