Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What is a good aftermarket exhaust system for a 1989 Nissan Sentra?

There are several good aftermarket mufflers available for cars. You dont want to overspend on something not needed. Mufflers dont do much for performance, just helps the engine breathe and sound better. I recommend 2 1/2 in piping when picking your muffler. Flowmaster is a good product and gives a low, mean grumble as you accelerate. I have a 2004 sentra se-r spec-v and i have a silverline exhaust with 2 1/2 in piping and a high performance header, which helps with not only power, but sound and fuel economy as well. I also recommend a cold air intake or ram-air intake if you're going to do you exhaust

A perfect running car produces power by changing fuel into water and CO2. The engine is warm enough that the water is normally vapor. Cold engines on a cold day may spit some water. Condensation in the muffler also causes this issue to an extent.

White smoke from exhaust pipe?

If it's actually white then it's water. Probably a blown head gasket. If it's got a slight blueish tint to it then it would be oil. If it's oil it will have a strong burned oil smell to it.

True dual exhaust is better for performance. Most cars on the road nowadays have the "fake" dual exhaust - tips only. They feed via the catalytic converter then after the rear axle - they branch into dual (or Y shaped) thus making the appearance of dual exhaust.

What is the difference between a muffler and a silencer?

If are referring to an automobile or truck, then it is two different words for the same thing. I am not certain, but believe "silencer" was more used by the English while "muffler" is the common word in the States.

Why is smoking good for us?

Smoking is not good for people, it just adds problems on to life. True, and I want to add that smoking can bring lung cancer and heart attack. Dont try to smoke!!! No point. No point in saying that smoking causes lung deases. Everyone knows that. If you ask a first grader, they will probably know. The problem isn't in knowing that it is bad for you. I bet you all teenagers that smoke know that. The problem is that they just think that it doesn't matter if you try once. But then they want to try a second. Then a third, and before you know it they are addicted and can't stop. All people who aren't smokers. PLEASE PLEASE JUST DONT SMOKE. That descision you make, whether to smoke or not, will affect your destiny and what you will be in the future. That one choice, that one decision, will determine what your path is and where it might lead. Every journey starts with a single step. That first step, that choice, will determine what your future is. Think before you start smoking. Because then later on, you will realize that you shouldn't have done it, but by the time you realize, it would be too late. So choose now, what's right for you. PLEASE. Think twice. Don't smoke.

How do you silence a loud exhaust noise?

Silencing a Loud ExhaustExhaust systems are very resistant to temporary fixes due to their heat and locale. If there is a hole in the exhaust have it patched or replaced, If the muffler no longer quiets the engine Replace it, If your header is leaking Get a new gasket and install it, Nothing else will work for more than a short time. An exhaust leak is an automatic fail on emissions testing, and carbon monoxide from the leak is dangerous. When replacing mufflers use the oem model they are quiet enough, aftermarket silencers cause excessive back pressure ( more than the muffler and Cat converter are already giving you) and will hurt performance and gas mileage.

What would cause a 91 Honda Accord with 234K to have blue white smoke when first started and how much should it cost to repair it?

I can't answer what the cost is to repair. But the blue-white smoke is probably oil that has run down through the valve seals while it sits overnight. With 234k (kilometers? miles?) it is not surprising at all that there might be some oil burning. No great harm done in the near future. I had this problem with an 1982 Accord and it was the valve guide seals. When they are worn oil leaks into the cylinder when the car sits and then is burned up after you start the car. I don't think the parts are expensive but unless you are pretty mechanically inclined a professional should repair it.
