Nunavut's purple saxifrage grows very well in cool weather. It is a small, bright-purple flower that grows like a mat over rocks and gravel. It can be found growing all over Nunavut, home of the inuit. This is why the territory chose the purple Saxifaga as its floral emblem in 2000.

Nunavut is not a province in Canada. It is one of three territories. It became a territory on April 1, 1999 when it split from the Northwest Territories, though the decision to become a separate territory, and boundaries were determined in the mid 90's. Nunavut was generally accepted as a location from the time around when the boundaries were set, even though it didn't gain official status until 1999.
There was a lot of talk over whether Nunavut should be created as a Territory or a Province in the mid 90's. It is my understanding that it was created as a territory with the intention of one day becoming a province.

It didn't. In 1999, Nunavut became Canada's 3rd territory. The territory was previously part of Northwest Territories but the new area of Nunavut was promised back in 1993. There is speculation that one day some of Canada's territories could become provinces.

This was useful until new diseases spread in the 1950 so the Inuits ended up worse of, due to the fact that widespread starvation and death occurred so the money was vitally important for medicines, as Inuits had not encountered these diseases before.
