Odometers

Odometers track the distance a vehicle has traveled. They are used in almost all cars, and on some bikes.

911 Questions

What does the odometer of the vehicle indicate?

An odometer indicates distance travelled by a vehicle.

Is it fine to change an odometer?

No. In most states it is a crime to tamper with a vehicle's odometer or hour meter.

You can however replace/repair a defective odometer if you document it.

Motor Vehicle Cost Information Act, 49 U.S.C. Section 32704

  1. (It shall be unlawful for a person) "with intent to defraud, operate a motor vehicle on a street, road, or highway if the person knows that the odometer of the vehicle is disconnected or not operating; or
  2. The owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach a written notice to the left doorframe of the vehicle specifying the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the date of the service, repair, or replacement.
  3. A person transferring ownership of a motor vehicle shall give the transferee the following written disclosure
    1. Disclosure of the cumulative mileage registered on the odometer,
    2. Disclosure that the actual mileage is unknown if the transferor knows that the odometer reading is different from different from the number of miles the vehicle has actually traveled.
      1. Mileage Statement Requirement for Licensing. - (1) A motor vehicle the ownership of which is transferred may not be licensed for use in a State unless the transferee, in submitting an application to a State for the title on which the license will be issued, includes with the application the transferor's title and, if that title contains the space referred to in paragraph (3)(A)(iii) of this subsection, a statement, signed and dated by the transferor, of the mileage disclosure required under subsection (a) of this section

WHY IS Odometer on 2000 caddy is going crazy?

I assume you mean reading all over the place, such as 0 to 160. If that is the case and you are going say 30? the culprit is most likely a ground wire located in the front of the engine at the alternator. It is either broken or breaking. It wont be charging your battery so get pulled over relatively soon.

Why would the odometer on a 1990 Dodge Ram quit working while the speedometer continues to work?

If you open the odometer, there are two small plastic gears. One is connected to the speedometer, the other to the odometer. The speedometer gear drives the odometer gear. In all likelihood, one of these gears is missing a few teeth. I have the same problem with my Ramcharger, same year.

How do you fix a odometer on your 1995 Nissan 200 se-r?

This is based on my experience with a 1995 200 sx se. I assume they are similar. The se uses the 1.6 engine and the se-r the 2.0. engine. The odometer runs on the same electronic gear driven sensor as the speedometer so if the speedometer is working and the odometer is not the problem is in the "Speed head" (speedometer unit in the dash). Mine and several others I have seen break at about 40,000 and will need replacing but first; If neither are working try to set your Cruise control. If it "goes wild" with clicks etc. and does not work the problem is likely the speed sensor located on the transmission. Find it on top on the transmission rear the fire wall. One set screw hold a small retaining plate. Remove it and pull straight up. The nylon gear wears out and causes it to not contact the drive gear anymore.

Can a speedometer be wrong?

Im not sure why but i now it can cause my father has a old ford f-100 and he got a ticket for going 67 around a turn and theres no way it tops out at prolly 50. Or was there a car in front of u when u got pulled?

Yes it can! I have a 1998 ford Ranger, it wasn't "right" straight from the factory. There are a variety of reasons including wrong size tires, worng gear in tranny on older models, defective instrument cluster. I am sure there are more reasons.

Recently a relative have a brand new 2004 Ford clocked at 5 mph over what the speedometer said the car was traveling. The dealership had to reprogram / replace the computer brain AND reprogram the door remotes for the car.

yes! many things can and will go wrong with a speedometer cluster digital or analog, try www.prospeedo.com they can help answer any speedometer related problems.

Why does odometer come on in dodges when door opens?

So you can check the mileage without having to turn the key on. It's more of a convenience feature than anything.

How do you reset a Chevy Impala odometer?

Odometer tampering is an illegal practice and a serious crime. So it might be better for you to see an authorized dealership to have anything done with your odometer.....

Why does it say trip a on your odometer on your eclipse?

Most modern cars will have two trip odos, the A and B odo. As opposed to the main odos these are easily resetable. They can be used to measure two separate distances simultaneously.

Let's say you're going on a drive lasting several days, and you reset both odos at the start. If you leave the A odo running, it'll record the total length of the journey. If you reset the B Odo each morning, it'll give you the distance driven each day.

Why did the speedometer and odometer stop working in a '93 Civic LX?

I believe that ur speed sensor is going bad to find this sensor, it rests on top on the transmission. This informs the PCM of the vehicle speed.Once this goes bad ur speedometer and odometer will not function. a screwdriver and small wrench shud remove this and install new one in same manner

How do you turn back the odometer on 2008 Caddilac Escalade?

Don't even contemplate doing this. It's illegal and is a (felony) to tamper with the odometer (mileage) of any car in the US. The odometer registers the miles driven by the vehicle, and to change that reading is a crime. If you change out the engine of a car, it will have no effect on the official mileage of the car. If you change out the transmission, it will also not affect the mileage, because the odometer is a self contained unit, that is designed to be tamperproof, so underhanded car dealers and private sellers can't 'reset' or lower the mileage shown on the odometer. Older cars can have their odometers cracked open and rolled back by hand, but again, this is VERY illegal, and if you're caught trying to sell a vehicle with an odometer discrepancy, it means jail time and a hefty fine. When someone replaces an engine, the car still has the same mileage, but the selling point becomes that there are only so many miles on the rebuilt engine. My advice, there's no legal way to reduce a car's mileage, and the consequences for trying to do it illegally are so great, it's not worth it. Forget this idea for whatever reason you may want to do this. It is not only illegal but is immoral also. You are a thief and a con man when you do this.

If your speedometer on a 1989 Dynasty works but the odometer doesn't work how do you fix it?

Apparently this is somewhat common. It happened to me and I haven't fixed it yet. You could buy another cluster from a junkyard and hope the mileage matches approximately so you can just stick the whole thing in, or you could try to harvest the little motor from the junker cluster and solder it onto your cluster.

How do you repair the odometer on a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire?

Tell us more!I'm guessing that your OD doesn't work at all? Is it an electronic or mechanical display?

FriPilot

---

I've repaired mine.

Let me guess....the digital display is flickering...right? It's cold solder on the LCD display. Here's what I did to fix it:

Remove whatever you need to to get to the cluster module (or whatever it's called). Take a look at the PCB. There should be a row of pins from the LCD display....and some of them should be loose. You'll have to resolder them....but it's trickier than it seems. First, there's some nasty conformal coating on the PCB wgich is very thick and needs to be removed around the pins before soldering. And second, either the LCD display pins or the solder pads (can't remember which) are made of a metal that is very hard to solder. Rosin flux didn't work very well....but it helped. Just try to use low heat if possible...or the solder will start to bead and fall off. Frustrating. But after all that, reinstall the module and it should work.

Unfortunately for me, when I reinstalled the module in my dash, the light bulb behind the odometer burnt out shortly after. This really sucks because not only do you have to uninstall everything again, but you have to remove the LCD display just to get at the tiny light bulb. So if that happens to you, it's a small 9v bulb....not easily obtainable locally. You'd need to order them though a supplier like DigiKey.

Good Luck.

$6.00 Answer

Just bought a 99 Sunfire Gt. It had the odometer light out.

I pulled out the gauge cluster and on the back is a steel cover.

Remove the cover. Then where the odometer is you will see a red clip, turn to the left and remove it. It as you will see is a bulb. You can rip on off another one at the wreckers or. You will need to go to Parts Source and get the smallest(closest match in size) 12volt bulb $2.00 and then go to an electronic repair shop and have them solder in the new bulb $4.00. (you can have them solder it direct to electronic board, that's what I did).

By the way DO NOT USE AN LED OR A SUPER BRIGHT

Just tooling around on my sunfire and figuring things is what I do best.

A new gauge cluster is what everyone told me...bull I have done this repair and it works like new, beeen working

How do you repair an odometer on a 1988 Nissan Pintara?

replace don't repairtake out the whole instrument cluster and bin get another form wrecker Skyline one are the same including tach. The odometer cost (out of instrument cluster) about $100 so its not financially viable. At the wrecker check there are some kilometre on trip meter if its 000 is probably another dud.

How much would it cost to have a broken odometer repaired by a mechanic or how do you repair it yourself?

It sounds like your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is faulty. The VSS controls your speedometer and odometer, and also effects your cruise control since there is no speed reading to set it by. It is supprisingly easy to fix. Typically, a 10mm wrench is all you need. The VSS is usually bolted somewhere on your transmission. But, depending on your car, VSS' can be expensive, so make sure that your fuses are all ok before investing in a new VSS. I got mine from www.rockauto.com

The odometer in your 94 Grand Marquis quit working but the trip odometer works How do you repair the main odometer?

Probably the cheap black plastic odometer gears(2) if you have set in center. If you have odometer on the left and trip odometer on the right then it is two sets...four gears. Usually when one breaks the other is not far behind in the two set type. There are several online suppliers who can provide parts for the repair.

How do you change bulbs for odometer and clock on rover 45?

Taking out the centre console.

First you'll need to remove the armrest

lever up the plastic cover under the handbrake using a flat blade screw diver from the middle of the little plastic cover on the edge nearest the rear of the car

You'll see 2 10mm bolts in there that need to be removed. (They also hold down the centre console)

Then slide both front seats right forward. Get in the back and you'll see 2 phillips screws at the bottom of each side of the armrest. Take these out, now the armrest should be free to lift up a bit. Leave it in place though, no need to disconnect the window switches, just have it floating loose.

Now get back into the front, (You may need to put the seats back for this)

There is an obvious phillips screw either side of the centre console to remove, take the ash tray out and there is another phillips screw to remove right at the back of that hole.

Now you have to carefully prise out the switches either side of the clock and disconnect the wirring from them. Now get down low and look through the holes where these switches have come out of and you'll see a hidden phillips screw either side in the switch holes. Take these out and the centre console should be able to move free (carefull of any wiring still connected though)

Now you can disconnect any more wiring, i.e. the clock and ciggy lighter socket and with a bit of jiggery pokery you should be able to manouver the centre console round to enable you to remove the clock, which IIRC has one phillips screw either side from the back.

although the above is the approved way to do it, if you take the radio/cd out, and have small hands and nimble fingers (or a small child you can bribe) it can be done that way by reaching up and round (i did it).

What does no bus mean when it shows in the odometer box?

"BUS" in this case is the computer network the different parts of the car use to talk to each other with. "No BUS" means that the odo can't hear what's going on elsewhere in the car, so it's not getting any info from the pickup in the tranny which is where it's getting its information from.

Best case, it's a bad connection that can be fixed by jiggling it about a bit.

How do you reset the odometer for a Lincoln LS?

If the Lincoln has a regular odometer and not run off the computer you can disconnect the cable and turn it in reversrse with a drill. By doing this with the intention of selling is against the law. It may be against the law period. I dont recommend this action period. Im not exactly sure about if this info is exactly correct. You do say reset so you dont really specify what you are doing, setting it up or back.
