Shortly after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) was founded in 1927, its members decided that there should be a night to honour and encourage outstanding achievements in filmmaking. The first awards banquet, which was to become an annual event, was held on May 16, 1929. The Academy Award of Merit, more commonly known as the Oscar, was designed by MGM Art Director Cedric Gibbons. The award was designed to represent the majesty of the occasion. Portraying a knight gripping a sword while standing on a reel of film, the golden statuette stands 13 1/2 inches tall and weighs 8 1/2 pounds. The film reel contains five spokes representing the five original areas of filmmaking that the Academy recognized: actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers.

A small dirt bike is a good place to start.
If you ride much, you'll have situations that could end up badly.
If you spend some time on a dirt bike learning how to ride through difficult situations, you'll be a much safer street rider. The dirt is a lot friendlier to skin than the pavement is. Road rash does hurt!!!

Although there are many upsets and less-deserving winners in Oscar history, the most controversial would have to be Crash winning Best Picture for 2005. Brokeback Mountain was the best reviewed of the year, while Crash had mixed reviews. However, may people believe Crash won because of the homophobia within Oscar voters, and the campaign for Crash among celebrities (Roger Ebert and Oprah, most notably).

The closest sports awards to the Oscars would be the ESPYs, which are presented by ESPN during baseball's All-Star break in July.
