Theodore Roosevelt deserves most of the credit. Taft and Wilson were also President during its construction.

There aren't any that I have ever found, but then, why would you want to find that? The local retail outlets in Albrook Mall have excellent appliances and furniture. You could hire a local cabbie for the day and ask where to shop. If you are an American, contact someone who has been there many times or who happens to live there. Many folkes I know have gone to Colon for a shopping excersion. Keep in mind that you need to go in daylight hours and go accompanied if possible. You won't get deep discounts you might get in the states but the furniture will be there. Colon is not primarily a retail market place but there are places there where you can purchase larger pieces. One really good source of information in the Lonely Planet series of books. Very up to date and honest. If they say somewhere is not safe alone, then believe them and don't go. Have a good time shopping. Remember that less is better in Panama.

The paper currency in the Republic of Panamá is the US dollar while coins are a mix of US coins and US minted centesimos, 5 centesimos, 10 centesimos, 25 centesimos, 50 centesimos and coins valued at B/1.00 (one dollar) and B/10.00 (ten dollars). No. There are what are called handline transits where small vessels are controlled by the use of hand lines between the vessel and the canal walls. A 500-ton vessel, or one even a fraction of that weight, could do severe damage to the lock gates if it got loose, so the diesel electric "mules" are used on anything of significant mass to maneuver is safely into and out of the locks. Though mules, the four-legged variety, were used along early canals in Europe and the U.S. to move barges, they were never used in the Panama Canal. From the onset, the protection of the lock gates mandated the use of the powerful machines we see there today. GE built the first ones, and Mitsubishi builds the current models in use there.
