How do you protect yourself from a lightning storm?
1. Know what constitutes a severe thunderstorm so you can survive it. It is relatively small and quick, about 15 miles wide and lasts 20 to 30 minutes. At minimum, hail must be ¾-inch in diameter, winds must be 58 mph or it must contain a tornado, and it always contains lightning. Although these are technicalities, watch for larger hail, strong winds or tornado-like clouds. If you see any of these, prepare for a severe thunderstorm.
2. Close your blinds, shades or curtains. It may be tempting to keep them open to watch the storm progress, but with the high winds and large hail, windows can shatter and the covering prevents glass shards from flying all over the home.
3. Unplug appliances including air conditioners during severe thunderstorms. Don't use the phone and don't run any water. These safety precautions protect you if lightning strikes on or near your home so you can survive the strike.
4. Seek shelter in a sturdy building and get to land immediately to survive if you're on the water. Although open picnic shelters or bleachers protect you from the rain, they're often targets for lightning and can blow over easily. Cars are the next best choice if buildings are not available, but keep windows shut. Groups of trees are alright but never choose a single tree or tall trees for protection.
5. Pull over to the side of the road if you're driving when a severe thunderstorm hits, finding a spot void of tall trees or other tall objects that may fall on your car. Keep the radio and your emergency flashers on until the storm passes. Do not attempt to drive in flooded areas because it takes as little as 2 feet of water to carry away an entire car.
How does a flame sensor works?
A flame sensor is a safety mechanism installed on gas furnaces. It is located directly between the burners and the gas supply. When your gas kicks on, the flame sensor MUST detect a flame. This safety mechanism is to prevent your house from filling up with un-lit gas. Even if your burners are igniting, if your Flame Sensor is dirty (covered in carbon from typical use) it will fault out, thus shutting off the furnace over and over. If this is the case, your furnace will kick on every 2 minutes (because the thermostat tells it your house is too cold) and then will shut off after 5 or 10 seconds as a result of the Flame Sensor Fault.

How are electrically energized fires started?
Electrical fires are usually caused a defect in an electrical system that causes a part to get very hot, igniting nearby combustible material. A typical defect is a loose connection of a wire onto a terminal, which causes overheating and/or sparks.

Resistance in an electrical circuit produces heat and ultimately results in temperatures great enough to cause flammable material to ignite. Typically poor connections, overloading and conductor breakdown are the major culprits in causing electrical fires.
Overloading occurs when too much demand, such as plugging multiple electrical appliances into a single receptacle, is put on a circuit. Poor connections occur when a connection is loose or fails to make full contact of a connector surface, such as when a power cord is not plugged fully into a receptacle and partially hangs out.
Conductor breakdown occurs for a number of reasons such as corrosion, ionization, insulation breakdown and metal degradation. All metal will eventually degrade over time and fail to conduct electricity effectively. As it degrades a conductor increases its resistance and in turn, produces more and more heat each time it is used. In most cases a conductor will just simply stop conducting electricity before it can threaten an electrical fire. But sometimes this process results in a flash-over point occurring before total failure and then on-going arcing occurs which generates enough heat for ignition if some flammable material is close enough to this electrical arcing.
Although electrical fires are relatively rare, they do occur when the wrong conditions exist. Usually these conditions are easily preventable with a little common sense and observation: never plug more than one plug into a receptacle; if you smell a burning smell near anything electrical or if you see any evidence of burning such as a black coating of soot on a receptacle, do not ignore it, have it repaired immediately.
If you are plagued with electrical problems then have a licensed electrician determine if the wiring has deteriorated enough to require replacement.
In all cases, if you suspect an electrical problem or have doubts about the safety of any electrical device then stop using it and have it checked out.
